Thermodynamics of correlated electrons with bond charge and Hubbard interaction in one dimension

Guido Jüttner, Andreas Klümper, Junji Suzuki

The integrable model of one-dimensional electrons with bond charge and Hubbard interaction is investigated at finite temperatures. The approach based on the quantum transfer matrix is employed. The specific heat and compressibility are calculated showing interesting structures at intermediate temperatures. In the low-temperature regime the Luttinger liquid picture is verified.

Intermediate bond-order-wave phase and nature of the order-to-order transition in the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model

Weber, Manuel

The Hubbard-Holstein model is one of the central models that describe the competition between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. In one dimension and at half-filling, the interplay between an electronic spin-density wave and a phonon-driven charge-density wave is considered to stabilize an intermediate Luther-Emery liquid. Here we show that, once the extended metallic regime disappears, a narrow bond-order-wave phase emerges. We use an exact directed-loop quantum Monte Carlo method for retarded interactions to simulate system sizes of several hundred sites, necessary to observe the weak signatures of this novel phase. Our results suggest a second-order quantum phase transition between the two charge orders that only turns first-order at strong coupling. Our findings are reminiscent of the extended Hubbard model, but they are driven by competing frequency dependencies of the same dynamically-screened Hubbard interaction.

Solitons with irrational charge in a one-dimensional quantum ferroelectric

Sijia Zhao, Steven Allan Kivelson

We use analytic (mean-field) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods to study a simplified one-dimensional version of the SSH-Holstein model of electron-phonon interactions with one electron per site (half filling) where, as a function of the ratio of the two couplings, three distinct insulating phases arise - a site-centered charge-density-wave (CDW), a bond-centered bond-density-wave (BDW), and an intermediate ferroelectric (inversion-symmetry breaking) phase with coexisting CDW and BDW order. In the intermediate phase our DMRG results establish the existence of point-like soliton excitations with irrational charge (that depends on a ratio of coupling constants) and either spin 1/2 or spin 0, and a surprisingly light effective mass.
