Abstract

We propose to use photon echoes in rare-earth-doped crystals to implement the Fourier-transform chirp algorithm. The process is considered for application to spectral analysis of fast radio-frequency signals. Compared with surface acoustic wave devices, the proposed scheme gives access to the larger bandwidths of rare-earth-doped crystals and greater flexibility. An experimental demonstration of the proposed process is reported.

We demonstrate implementation of the chirp transform algorithm with photon echoes in an Er/sup 3+/:YSO crystal at 1536 nm for application to spectral analysis of RF signals. The principle and features of the technique are presented using a simple picture in the time-frequency plane. Experimental results with low-bandwidth RF signals demonstrate 40-kHz spectral resolution and a time-bandwidth product of 500. Extension to broad-band RF signals is discussed.

We report what is believed to be the first experimental demonstration of a wideband spectral coherent process driven by a frequency-agile laser in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal. The very demanding chirp-transform algorithm is studied in detail and is applied to radio-frequency spectral analysis. A time-bandwidth product of 24,000 is demonstrated.

We report on the demonstration of the chirp transform algorithm for the optical processing of wide band RF signals. The process uses photon echoes in an Er3+:YSO crystal at 1536 nm. The analysis covers a 1.5 GHz instantaneous bandwidth together with more than 20,000 independent channels. These performances require a frequency agile laser source that is phase-locked in order to take advantage of the high coherence of the system

In this contribution, we report on what is believed to be the first experimental demonstration of photon echoes in an amplifying rare-earth ion-doped crystal and highlighted the advantages of the process. It considerably improves the diffraction efficiency and the echo power in single shot, up to a factor 3 in our relatively low optical density sample.
