Electromagnetically induced blazed grating at low light levels

Abstract

We propose a scheme for inducing a blazed transmission grating in a four-level, $N$-type atomic medium under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The blazed grating relies on the giant Kerr nonlinearity that the atomic medium exhibits under EIT. The grating is created using an intensity mask in one of the driving optical fields and only weak fields with intensities below saturation level are involved. Diffraction efficiencies of a resonant probe beam close to $100%$ are predicted.

Electromagnetically induced phase grating

Luı́s E. E. de Araujo

I propose an electromagnetically induced phase grating based on the giant Kerr nonlinearity of an atomic medium under electromagnetically induced transparency. The atomic phase grating behaves similarly to an ideal sinusoidal phase grating, and it is capable of producing a pi phase excursion across a weak probe beam along with high transmissivity. The grating is created with arbitrarily weak fields, and diffraction efficiencies as high as 30% are predicted.

Electromagnetically induced grating via Kerr nonlinearity and spontaneously generated coherence in a Doppler broadened four-level N-type atomic system

Amjad Hussain, Muqaddar Abbas, Ziauddin Ziauddin +1 more

Abstract We study the electromagnetically induced grating in a four-level N-type atomic system in the presence of Kerr field, spontaneously generated coherence (SGC), and Doppler broadening. The transmission and diffraction intensity of the probe light is controlled through the Kerr field and the SGC. The gradual increase of the Kerr field and the SGC in the presence of a Doppler broadened medium leads to the enhanced multiple transmission and intensity peaks of the probe light. The electromagnetically induced grating may find applications in a quantized probe field, all-optical switching, routing, and light storage devices.

Generation of tunable-volume transmission-holographic gratings at low light levels

Lu Zhao, Wenhui Duan, Susanne F. Yelin

By utilizing giant Kerr nonlinearity obtained by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), tunable volume transmission holographic gratings for a weak probe field can be generated by means of a standing-wave signal field at low light levels in a four-level $N$-type ultracold atomic ensemble. The induced grating can be characterized as a mixed volume holographic grating with a strong phase modulation accompanied by a weak amplitude modulation. Based on Kogelnik's coupled-wave theory in optical holography, we find that high diffraction efficiency (up to $85%$) and sensitive angular selectivity (up to $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.000149$ rad) can be achieved for the induced grating in the Bragg diffraction regime. And, both of them can be dynamically controlled by tuning the weak standing-wave signal field and the coupling field. Our study not only develops a fundamental understanding of volume diffraction effects in EIT media, but also provides a practical prototype of EIT-based holographic devices for all-optical classical and quantum information processing.

Electromagnetically induced cross focusing in a four-level atomic medium

E. M. Becerra-Castro, Luı́s E. E. de Araujo

We describe cross focusing in a four-level atomic medium under electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that due to the giant Kerr nonlinearity experienced by the atoms, cross focusing between weak signal and probe fields (both fields with intensities below line saturation level) is possible. By applying different intensity masks to the signal field, different lenses (cylindrical, Fresnel, Gaussian) can be induced in the atomic sample. Focusing of the probe beam is analyzed in terms of the excitation parameters (signal Rabi frequency and detuning, as well as optical depth of the atomic medium).
