Influence of inelastic collisions on the width of optical lines involving Rydberg states

It is shown that with use of some assumptions the cross sections for the broadening of optical lines originating from Rydberg levels can be interpreted with a simple model which takes into account the elastic and the quenching cross sections of the corresponding Rydberg states. The validity of the model is extensively discussed. Good agreement is observed in most cases between the values derived from the model and the available experimental data for the broadening and quenching cross sections of a wide set of Rb and Na Rydberg levels perturbed by noble gases. It is clearly demonstrated that inelastic processes can significantly affect the broadening cross sections even for large values of the principal quantum number $n$.

Inelastic collisions between high Rydberg (n≈40) and ground-state rubidium atoms at thermal energies

M Hugon, F. Gounand, P. R. Fournier +1 more

The authors have measured the cross sections for the collisional quenching of highly excited (34<or=n<or=43) S rubidium atoms by ground-state rubidium atoms. The comparison between their data and the values calculated using a theoretical approach that only takes into account the valence electron-ground-state rubidium interaction provides the first experimental estimation of the cross section for the elastic scattering of ultra-low-energy electrons (E approximately=0.01 eV) by rubidium atoms. Their results for the quenching are connected to the available measurements of the self-broadening of the rubidium (5S-nS) lines by using a recent theoretical model: for n approximately 40 the self-broadcasting is essentially due to inelastic collisions. An upper limit is given for the cross section for the isotopic transfer between 85 Rb(nS) and 87 Rb(nS) states due to collisions with ground-state rubidium atoms.

Impact-broadening cross sections of Rydberg levels of alkaline-earth atoms by collision with rare gases at thermal energy

Using the wave functions of the multichannel-quantum-defect theory, a semiclassical theory for both elastic and inelastic collisional cross sections of Rydberg atoms, in which there can be more than one valence electron, with ground-state rare-gas atoms is obtained. Especially the noble-gas-induced broadening cross sections of Rydberg series in alkaline-earth atoms can be calculated. An application of theory is shown to explain the irregular broadening rates of Sr 5sns $^{1}$${\mathit{S}}_{0}$ series due to collision with Xe, and a good agreement between theory and experiment is achieved.
