Two-step approach to the dynamics of coupled anharmonic oscillators

Abstract

We have further extended the two-step approach developed by Chung and Chew [N. N. Chung and L. Y. Chew, Phys. Rev. A 76, 032113 (2007)] to the solution of the quantum dynamics of general systems of $N$-coupled anharmonic oscillators. The idea is to employ an optimized basis set to represent the dynamical quantum states of these oscillator systems. The set is generated via the action of the optimized Bogoliubov transformed bosonic operators on the optimal squeezed vacuum product state. The procedure requires (i) applying the two-step approach to the eigendecomposition of the time evolution operator and (ii) transforming the representation of the initial state from the original to the optimal bases. We have applied the formalism to examine the dynamics of squeezing and entanglement of several anharmonic oscillator systems.

Energy eigenvalues and squeezing properties of general systems of coupled quantum anharmonic oscillators

Ning Ning Chung, Lock Yue Chew

We have generalized the two-step approach to the solution of systems of $N$ coupled quantum anharmonic oscillators. By using the squeezed vacuum state of each individual oscillator, we construct the tensor product state, and obtain the optimal squeezed vacuum product state through energy minimization. We then employ this optimal state and its associated bosonic operators to define a basis set to construct the Heisenberg matrix. The diagonalization of the matrix enables us to obtain the energy eigenvalues of the coupled oscillators. In particular, we have applied our formalism to determine the eigenenergies of systems of two coupled quantum anharmonic oscillators perturbed by a general polynomial potential, as well as three and four coupled systems. Furthermore, by performing a first-order perturbation analysis about the optimal squeezed vacuum product state, we have also examined into the squeezing properties of two coupled oscillator systems.

Study of continuous variable entanglement in coupled oscillator systems by means of the dynamical two-step approach

Ning Ning Chung

We have extended the applicability of the two-step approach to higher-dimensional problem, and have further developed it to evaluate the quantum dynamics and stationary states of a general class of coupled anharmonic oscillator system. This new approach has enabled us to investigate the topic of continuous variable entanglement within these coupled oscillator systems with good numerical efficiency. In particular, we have applied it to study the relation between entanglement, squeezing, and quantum uncertainties, of the systems’ ground states. Interestingly, while the relation between quadrature squeezing and entanglement depends sensitively on the nonlinear potential, the influence of nonlinear perturbation on the entropy-uncertainty relation is minimal, especially when the entanglement between the two oscillators is large. We have also explored into the dynamics of entanglement where we have found that entanglement dynamics can depend completely on the global classical dynamical regime, without being influenced by the local classical behavior.

Iterative Bogoliubov transformations and anharmonic oscillators

Rocío Jáuregui, J. Récamier

An algebraic method for studying quantum anharmonic oscillators is proposed. It consists in the iterative application of generalized (squeezing) Bogoliubov transformations to the usual creation and annihilation operators. The convergence of this procedure is analyzed for quartic, cubic plus quartic, and symmetric-double-well Hamiltonians. For these systems, we show the usefulness of the resulting harmonic-oscillator number states in calculating the energy spectra.

Anharmonic oscillators and generalized squeezed states

Davood Afshar, Mojtaba Jafarpour

We present a new method to study the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of anharmonic oscillators. It involves a new class of Bogoliubov transformations and leads to the introduction of k-photon coherent states. We consider the Hamiltonians for the simple harmonic and anharmonic oscillators as the two generators of a Lie algebra, whose other generators may be found exactly, or up to any desired order of the perturbation parameter involved. An element of this Lie group, turning out to be the multi-photon operator, transforms the anharmonic Hamiltonian to the harmonic one, thus facilitating the calculation of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the former. The transformation of the ordinary annihilation and creation operators leads to generalized ones, corresponding to generalized oscillation modes, and also helps us out to introduce multi-photon coherent states. We specifically consider four-photon coherent states in detail and study time dependent position and momentum uncertainties in these states.

Reduced dynamics of coupled harmonic and anharmonic oscillators using higher-order perturbation theory

Markus Schröder, Michael Schreiber, Ulrich Kleinekathöfer

Several techniques to solve a hierarchical set of equations of motion for propagating a reduced density matrix coupled to a thermal bath have been developed in recent years. This is either done using the path integral technique as in the original proposal by Tanimura and Kubo [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 58, 101 (1998)] or by the use of stochastic fields as done by Yan et al. [Chem. Phys. Lett. 395, 216 (2004)]. Based on the latter ansatz a compact derivation of the hierarchy using a decomposition of the spectral density function is given in the present contribution. The method is applied to calculate the time evolution of the reduced density matrix describing the motion in a harmonic, an anharmonic, and two coupled oscillators where each system is coupled to a thermal bath. Calculations to several orders in the system-bath coupling with two different truncations of the hierarchy are performed. The respective density matrices are used to calculate the time evolution of various system properties and the results are compared and discussed with a special focus on the convergence with respect to the truncation scheme applied.

Comment on ‘‘Iterative Bogoliubov transformations and anharmonic oscillators’’

Francisco Marcelo Fernández, Eduardo Alberto Castro

We discuss a recently proposed method [R. J\'auregui and J. R\'ecamier, Phys. Rev. A 46, 2240 (1992)] based on the application of iterative Bogoliubov transformations to anharmonic oscillators and show that, if the algorithm converges, one easily obtains the final result directly in one step. We prove that the Bogoliubov transformation can be written in terms of scaling and translation parameters and present exact results for the coefficients of the Bogoliubov transformation for some selected examples.
