Transition to dynamic chaos in the interaction of a two-level atom in a cavity with its own radiation field

Abstract

An analytic symmetry approach is proposed and applied to nonlinear Hamiltonian dynamics of the self-consistent interaction of a two-level atom in a high-Q cavity with its own radiation field. A numerical investigation is reported of a transition from quasiperiodic to deterministically chaotic oscillations in a system of this kind which has classical and quantum degrees of freedom. This occurs when the control parameter Ω, which is the constant of the atom—field interaction, is increased. The largest Lyapunov exponent (which is a measure of the degree of chaos of a system) is used to demonstrate an alternation of the order—chaos transitions with increase in Ω. The power spectra and the phase portraits obtained for different ranges of Ω confirm the predicted path of the appearance of dynamic chaos in the fundamental model of quantum electronics.

Lyapunov exponents and order-to-chaos transitions in the interaction of two-level atoms with their own radiation field

Leonid E. Kon’kov, Sergey V. Prants

With the help of Lyapunov exponents different routes to quantum chaos are demonstrated numerically in two semiclassical models of the interaction of N two-level atoms with their own radiation field in a resonant cavity. The usual transition to chaos is observed when varying the external control parameter b which describes the interaction of the atomic ensemble with the field. After reaching its critical value b approximately equal to 1 the system becomes more and more chaotic as b increases. As the second control parameter a (the dimensionless individual Rabi frequency) increases the system undergoes transitions to chaos by a completely different way. We observe a complex sequence of order-to-chaos transitions that resembles those for the classical Lorenz attractor.

Regular and Chaotic Quantum Dynamics of Two-Level Atoms in a Selfconsistent Radiation Field

Leonid E. Kon’kov, Sergei V Prants

Dynamics of two-level atoms interacting with their own radiation field in a single-mode high-quality resonator is considered. The dynamical system consists of two second-order differential equations, one for the atomic SU(2) dynamical-group parameter and another for the field strength. With the help of the maximal Lyapunov exponent for this set, we numerically investigate transitions from regularity to deterministic quantum chaos in such a simple model. Increasing the collective coupling constant b is identical with 8(pi)N(sub 0)(d(exp 2))/hw, we observed for initially unexcited atoms a usual sharp transition to chaos at b(sub c) approx. equal to 1. If we take the dimensionless individual Rabi frequency a = Omega/2w as a control parameter, then a sequence of order-to-chaos transitions has been observed starting with the critical value a(sub c) approx. equal to 0.25 at the same initial conditions.

Quantum control and quantum chaos in cavity QED

Michael Yu. Uleysky, Sergei V Prants

Nonlinear dynamics in the fundamental interaction between a two-level atom with recoil and a quantized radiation field in a high-quality cavity is studied. We consider the strongly coupled atom-field system as a quantum-classical hybrid with dynamically coupled quantum and classical degrees of freedom. It is shown that at given initial conditions the regime of atomic motion is governed mainly by the detuning of the atom-field resonance /spl delta/. We show that, even in the absence of any other interaction with environment, the interaction of a purely quantum atom-field system with the external atomic degree of freedom provides the emergence of classical dynamical chaos from quantum electrodynamics (QED). It manifest itself in the classical degree of freedom as a random walking of an atom inside the cavity and in the quantum degrees of freedom as a sensitive dependence of atomic inversion on small variations in initial conditions. It is shown that dependence of variance of entanglement on /spl delta/, correlates strongly with the dependence of maximum Lyapunov exponent on /spl delta/. This result provides a quantum-classical correspondence in a closed physical system.

Parametric instability and Hamiltonian chaos in cavity semiclassical electrodynamics

Sergey V. Prants, Leonid E. Kon’kov

We study the nonlinear dynamics of the interaction of two-level atoms and a selected mode of a high- Q cavity with frequency modulation analytically and numerically. In the absence of modulation, the corresponding semiclassical Heisenberg equations for the expectation values of the collective atomic observables and the field-mode amplitudes allow, in the rotating wave approximation and in the strong-coupling limit, an exact solution with arbitrary detuning. Using this solution, we detect the coherent effect of trapping of the population of atomic levels and of trapping of the number of photons in the cavity. The explanation for this effect lies in the destructive interference of the atomic dipoles and the field mode. The integrable version of the system of equations exhibits a separatrix near which a stochastic layer is formed when modulation is introduced. The width of the layer is found to gradually increase with degree of modulation, and finally it fills the entire energy-permissible volume of the phase space. We show that the rotating wave approximation does not hinder the formation of Hamiltonian chaos in cavity semiclassical electrodynamics. The calculation of the maximum Lyapunov indices of nonlinear (in this approximation) equations of motion as functions of the modulation frequency δ and the frequency of natural Rabi oscillations of the atom-field system, Ω, suggests that Hamiltonian chaos appears first in the area of the fundamental parametric resonance, δ /2Ω≃1. Parametric instability increases with increasing modulation and decreasing detuning from the atom-field resonance, generating at exact resonance new areas of chaos corresponding to multiple parametric resonances. The results of numerical experiments and estimates of the characteristic parameters show that Rydberg atoms placed in a high- Q microwave cavity are possible objects for observing parametric instability and dynamical chaos.

Quantum chaos in the group-theoretical picture

Leonid E. Kon’kov, Sergey V. Prants

The dynamical-group approach is developed and applied to investigate the problems of controllability and quantum chaos in two fundamental models of the matter–radiation interaction. It provides a new insight into the dynamics of nonstationary quantum process of the interaction between two-level atoms and a single-mode radiation field without and with the feedback. A sequence of transitions from the quasiperiodicity to chaos has been numerically observed for two-level atoms interacting with a self-consistently generated radiation field. The unitary irreducible representations of the SU(2) group of dynamical symmetry in a noncanonical parametrization is constructed, allowing one to use the results for describing the time evolution of any driven quantum system with the underlying SU(2) symmetry.

Chaotic dynamics for a system of two-level atoms interacting with photons

Alexander V. Gorokhov, E. V. Rogacheva, V. V. Ruchkov

Some quantum optical models possessing a transition from regular to chaotic dynamics and influence of 'quantum chaos' to photons statistics are investigated. Particular cases of semiclassical dynamics of a single atom and cooperative system of these atoms with (2j + 1) -- equidistant levels interacting with a quantized photon mode in an ideal cavity were considered. We take into account parametric pumping. Corresponding equations of motion are received without the rotation-wave approximation. It was demonstrated the scenario of transition to chaos, realized by doubling frequencies mechanism with growing of 'atom + field' coupling constant. Chaotic behavior and squeezing degree time dependence were obtained in computer simulations for coupling constant values of order of the atomic frequency, the calculation of the maximal Lyapunov coefficient for the dynamics of many two- level atoms interacting with photon cavity mode as function of 'atoms + field' interaction constant is performed. An influence of possible parametric instabilities of nonlinear media and effects of dissipation for atoms are discussed.
