Quantum state preparation using cavities and quantum memories

Martin Bouillard, Guillaume Boucher, Bhaskar Kanseri +1 more

Quantum state engineering has seen important developments over the last decade. The use of hybrid protocols, combining the discrete and continuous variables of light, can achieve high detection efficiencies, making them a good candidate for the production of non-classical states. Schrödinger cat states (SCSs), superpositions of two coherent states |α〉 in phase opposition (ψcat) 〉 |α〉 ± |-α〉), constitute an important member of this family. Such states have found promising applications in testing fundamental concepts, in quantum cryptography, and in quantum information, making them highly popular in the quantum optics domain. The SCSs produced so far in free space had small amplitudes α, limiting their applicability. One can increase α with iterative protocols but the probabilistic nature of such methods makes the success probability drops as α grows. As it can drastically increase the success rate of such iterative protocols, the use of quantum memories appears to be a cornerstone for the generation of quantum states. To produce states of large amplitudes at a high repetition rate, we start by preparing a first building block, namely a single-photon generator, and we then look for the implementation of a cavity to store the produced quantum state.

Engineering Schrödinger cat states through cavity-assisted interaction of coherent optical pulses

B. Wang, Luming Duan

We propose a scheme to engineer Schrödinger-cat states of propagating optical pulses. Multi-dimensional and multi-partite cat states can be generated simply by reflecting coherent optical pulses successively from a single-atom cavity. The influences of various sources of noise, including the atomic spontaneous emission and the pulse shape distortion, are characterized through detailed numerical simulation, which demonstrates practicality of this scheme within the reach of current experimental technology.

Hybrid Entanglement of Light for Heterogeneous Quantum Networks

Olivier Morin, Hanna Le Jeannic, Kun Huang +5 more

In optical quantum information, one can distinguish two approaches: the discrete-variable (DV), involving single photons, for example c0|0〉 + c1|1〉, and the continuous-variable alternative (CV) encoding information into the quadrature components of the light field. In this CV approach, qubits can be implemented as superposition of coherent states of opposite phases, |cat ±〉 = |α〉 ± |−α〉, also called optical Schrodinger cat states. Combining these two approaches has recently led to a so-called optical hybrid quantum information aiming at merging the properties of both [1]. As both encodings have their own advantages and drawbacks, transferring information between them is a requirement which can be fulfill by teleportation using hybrid entanglement between particle-like qubits and wave-like qubits, i.e. entanglement of the form |0〉|α〉 + |1〉|−α〉.

Generation of squeezed Schrödinger cat states with an operation allowing iterative growth

Jean Etesse, Martin Bouillard, Bhaskar Kanseri +1 more

We present what is to our knowledge the first implementation of a Schrödinger cat states "breeding" operation, which allows an iterative growth of these states. We thus report the experimental generation of a squeezed Schrödinger cat state from two single photon Fock states, which can be seen as cat states with zero amplitude. These Fock states are mixed on a symmetrical beamsplitter and the generation is heralded by a homodyne measurement in one of the two output arms. The output state has a fidelity of 61% with an even squeezed Schrödinger cat state of amplitude $α=1.63$. This hybrid operation opens up new prospects in quantum optics as the protocol depicted here can be iterated in order to produce new kind of mesoscopic states.
