An exactly solvable model where properties of a fermion assembly are dominated by the highest occupied level: case of harmonic confinement inddimensions

Abstract

It is shown explicitly that the fermion particle density ϱ( r ) in d dimensions for isotropic harmonic confinement and odd d is determined by the one-dimensional wavefunctions of the highest occupied state. Knowledge of the Dirac density matrices for d = 1 and 2 suffices to completely determine the general d -dimensional matrices.

Density and near-diagonal Dirac density matrix for closed shells of isotropic harmonically confined fermions in three dimensions

I. A. Howard, Norman Henry March

In early work, Lawes and March obtained a differential equation for an arbitrary number of independent harmonically confined fermions in one dimension, and very recently this result has been generalized to apply to three-dimensional (3D) isotropic harmonic confinement. Here, an exact solution of this 3D equation for the fermion particle density ρ( r ) is constructed, and the near-diagonal form of the Dirac density matrix is also obtained.

Relativistic effects when many independent Fermions are confined inddimensions

I. A. Howard, N. H. March

The study of the density of independent harmonically confined Fermions is of considerable current interest because of (a) quantum dots and (b) the experiments of DeMarco and Jin on some alkali metal vapours in magnetic traps. Our concern here is with relativistic effects, first in harmonically confined assemblies of electrons as in (a) above and secondly with a stronger type of Fermion confinement typified again by electrons but now in a quartic rather than quadratic potential. While our numerical illustrations are for dimensionalities d = 1 and 3, some analytical results are presented in d dimensions.

The Pauli potential in one-dimensional density functional theory: general result for two-level systems and specific example forNharmonically confined Fermions

I. A. Howard, N. H. March

There is ongoing interest in the kinetic energy functional T s [ρ] in density functional theory. The present study lies in this area and concerns the Pauli potential V P [ρ]. A differential equation is obtained here for V P ( x ) in one dimension for a general two-level system. Also, as a specific example, such a functional of ρ( x ), the ground-state Fermion density, is given for the case of N Fermions which are harmonically confined.

Single-particle kinetic energy in density-functional theory: Harmonic confinement in two and three dimensions

N. H. March

Using the known perturbation series for the idempotent Dirac density matrix in powers of a given one-body potential $V(\mathbf{r})$, Stoddart and March (SM) generated a corresponding series for the kinetic energy density. While the general term of the SM series is known, a summation has not been achieved to date. A contribution to solve this problem is made here by exhibiting an explicit form of the above kinetic energy density for Fermions filling an arbitrary number of closed shells, when the confinement is harmonic. This example is of considerable current interest because of ongoing experiments on ultracold atomic gases of Fermions.

OFF-DIAGONAL LONG RANGE ORDER OF THE REDUCED DENSITY MATRICES FOR A ONE-DIMENSIONAL SOLVABLE MODEL OF FERMIONS

Fu‐Cho Pu, Bao‐Heng Zhao

A one-dimensional solvable model of fermions is mapped to the XXX ferromagnetic chain. At T = 0, it is shown that there is off-diagonal long range order for the reduced density matrix ρ2 in the model. In momentum space the single particle state pairs are coherently occupied. The momenta of the particles in each pair are equal but with opposite directions.

On the density profile in Fourier space of harmonically confined ideal quantum gases inddimensions

K. Bencheikh, Luis Miguel Nieto

Closed-form analytical expressions and asymptotic results are obtained for the density distribution in Fourier space of harmonically trapped fermion gases at zero and nonzero temperatures in d dimensions. The result is applied to weakly interacting Fermi gases and to the elastic scattering from atomic nuclei. The Fourier transform of the momentum density for a d-dimensional harmonic confinement is also found.
