We present an analytical solution of the coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations for the case of a laser-driven and coherently prepared medium with one upper state and N lower states. We show that under specific conditions the medium can become either completely opaque or completely transparent to the laser pulses. We also study the potential for efficient parametric generation of $N\ensuremath{-}m$ laser pulses and show that this is possible by injecting the system with m input pulses.

We explore the laser-pulse propagation dynamics when one, two, or three pulses resonantly drive a coherently prepared four-level medium in a tripod configuration. If the system is prepared in a coherent superposition of two of the lower levels, we show that two incident resonant pulses can parametrically generate a third pulse in the medium. Over short distances, the propagation of this generated pulse can be partially controlled by varying the Rabi frequency of one of the driving fields. For a medium prepared in a coherent superposition of the three lower levels, we obtain a general expression for a three-photon Beer's length. Under specific conditions, the medium can either become completely opaque or completely transparent to three incident resonant pulses. Moreover, a single incident pulse can be used to parametrically generate two additional pulses. Finally, a general relationship is found that links the amplitudes of the initial superposition of states and the amplitudes of the pulses at large distances in the medium, implying that the initial superposition can be used to engineer the amplitudes of the exiting pulses.
A solution is obtained for the system of Maxwell-Schrödinger equations describing the propagation of a laser pulse through a three-level Λ medium in which the initial atomic populations are in a specially prepared coherent superposition of low-energy states. This solution describes a new type of transparency which is characterized by the presence of conversion of the frequency of the incident pulse and can be used, specifically, to produce “optical keys” and frequency converters for laser radiation.
We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such i.e., the effect is established. Under conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state. We analyze the effects of partial coherence of ground-state preparation on two-pulse propagation in a three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ medium, in contrast to previous treatments that have considered the cases of media whose ground states are characterized by probabilities (level populations) or by probability amplitudes (coherent pure states). We present analytic solutions of the Maxwell-Bloch equations, and we extend our analysis with numerical solutions to the same equations. We interpret these solutions in the bright and dark dressed-state basis, and show that they describe a population transfer between the bright and dark state. For mixed-state $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ media with partial ground-state phase coherence the dark state can never be fully populated. This has implications for phase-coherent effects such as pulse matching, coherent population trapping, and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that for partially phase-coherent three-level media, self-induced transparency dominates EIT and our results suggest a corresponding three-level area theorem.
