Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new type of code called Trellis-based Quasi-Cyclic (TQC)-LDPC convolutional code, which is a special case of protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. The proposed TQC-LDPC convolutional code can be derived from any QC-LDPC block code by introducing trellis-based convolutional dependency to the code. The main advantage of the proposed TQC-LDPC convolutional code is that it allows reduced decoder complexity and input granularity (which is defined as the minimum number of input information bits the code requires to generate a codeword) while maintaining the same bit error-rate as the underlying QC-LDPC block code ensemble. We also propose two related power-efficient encoding methods to increase the code rate of the derived TQC-LDPC convolutional code. The newly derived short constraint length TQC-LDPC convolutional codes enable low complexity trellis-based decoders and one such decoder is proposed and described in this paper (namely, QC-Viterbi). The TQC-LDPC convolutional codes and the QC-Viterbi decoder are compared to conventional LDPC codes and Belief Propagation (BP) iterative decoders with respect to bit-error-rate (BER), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and decoder complexity. We show both numerically and through hardware implementation results that the proposed QC-Viterbi decoder outperforms the BP iterative decoders by at least 1 dB for same complexity and BER. Alternatively, the proposed QC-Viterbi decoder has 3 times lower complexity than the BP iterative decoder for the same SNR and BER. This low decoding complexity, low BER, and fine granularity makes it feasible for the proposed TQC-LDPC convolutional codes and associated trellis-based decoders to be efficiently implemented in high data rate, next generation mobile systems.

Construction of Regular Quasi-Cyclic Protograph LDPC Codes Based on Vandermonde Matrices

Nicholas Bonello, Sheng Chen, Lajos Hanzo

In this paper, we investigate the attainable performance of quasi-cyclic (QC) protograph low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for transmission over both additive white Gaussian noise and uncorrelated Rayleigh channels. The presented codes are constructed using the Vandermonde matrix and thus have a girth of at least six in their corresponding Tanner graph. Furthermore, they also benefit from both low-complexity encoding and decoding, low memory requirements, as well as hardware-friendly implementations. Our simulation results demonstrate that the advantages offered by this family of QC protograph LDPC codes accrue with no compromise in the attainable bit error ratio (BER) and block error ratio (BLER) performances. In fact, it is also shown that despite their implementational benefits, the proposed codes exhibit slight BER/BLER gains when compared to some of their more complex counterparts of the same length.

Design of improved quasi-cyclic protograph-based Raptor-like LDPC codes for short block-lengths

Sudarsan V. S. Ranganathan, D. Divsalar, Richard D. Wesel

Protograph-based Raptor-like low-density parity-check codes (PBRL codes) are a recently proposed family of easily encodable and decodable rate-compatible LDPC (RC-LDPC) codes. These codes have an excellent iterative decoding threshold and performance across all design rates. PBRL codes designed thus far, for both long and short block-lengths, have been based on optimizing the iterative decoding threshold of the protograph of the RC code family at various design rates. In this work, we propose a design method to obtain better quasi-cyclic (QC) RC-LDPC codes with PBRL structure for short block-lengths (of a few hundred bits). We achieve this by maximizing an upper bound on the minimum distance of any QC-LDPC code that can be obtained from the protograph of a PBRL ensemble. The obtained codes outperform the original PBRL codes at short block-lengths by significantly improving the error floor behavior at all design rates. Furthermore, we identify a reduction in complexity of the design procedure, facilitated by the general structure of a PBRL ensemble.

Optimized Construction of Short and High Rate Protograph QC-LDPC Codes

Jianrong Bao, Xiaorong Xu, Chao Liu +2 more

To obtain efficient and pragmatic channel codes high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), an optimized construction of short and high rate protograph quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is presented. Based on an optimized protograph template, the code framework is firstly produced by the extensions of the variable nodes. By enlarging the dimension of the sub-matrices related to the protograph framework, the base quasi-cyclic (QC) matrix is generated with required code rate and length. Then, the elements in the base matrix are split with even smaller square sub-matrices of the same row and column weights. In this procedure, a progressive edge growth (PEG) algorithm is employed to find the optimized positions of the QC submatrices, which brings larger girth for better code performance. Also the circulant offsets in all QC sub-matrices are optimally searched by a QC improved approximated cycle extrinsic message degree (QCI-ACE) algorithm, which improves the relationship of the unavoidable loops in the code's Tanner graph and thus it improves the error floor. Simulation results show that the codes produced by the proposed method demonstrate quite good bit error rate (BER) performance. In addition, they exhibit good properties of high spectrum efficiency by the high code rate, as well as the low complexity by the short code length. Therefore, the proposed code construction can be efficiently applied in the design of short and high rate protograph QC-LDPC codes with high rate and rational complexity.

New Ensemble of Time-invariant LDPC Convolutional Codes with High Performance

Liwei Mu, Xingcheng Liu, Zhang Han

③ Abstract: In this paper, a new ensemble of the polynomial matrix of a time-invariant LDPC convolutional code is proposed. Based on the method of deriving time-invariant LDPC convolutional codes from QC (Quasi-Cyclic)- LDPC block codes, the elements over finite fields are used to generate directly the polynomial parity-check matrices of LDPC convolutional codes. A concrete example of using MDS (Maximum-Distance Separable) convolutional codes to derive the polynomial matrices is given. The proposed method ensures the fast encoding property, maximum encoding memory and designed rate. Simulation results show that the proposed LDPC convolutional codes exhibit low error floor and good decoding performance under BP (Belief Propagation) decoding algorithm over AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise) channel.

On the use of QC-LDPC code for data transfer using short and medium block length

Mohammad Rakibul Islam, Jinsang Kim

Quasi Cyclic Low Density Parity Check codes (QC-LDPC) is proposed to reduce the complexity of the Low Density Parity Check codes (LDPC) further while obtaining the similar performance. Our proposed QC-LDPC presents an improved construction of circulant sub-matrices based QC-LDPC at high SNR. The proposed construction yields a performance gain of about 1 dB at a 0.0003 bit error rate (BER). Proposed code is tested on 4 types of decoding algorithm and compared. Proposed algorithm is also compared with the existing QC-LDPC and the proposed approach outperforms the existing one at high SNR. Simulation is also performed varying the number of horizontal submatrix and the result shows that the parity check matrix with smaller horizontal concatenation shows better performance.
