THE QUASI-CRYSTALLINE QUANTUM SPIN-½ XY-CHAIN

Abstract

The quantum spin-½ chain with "quasicrystalline" couplings in the XY-plane and a steady magnetic field in the Z-direction is studied. The zero-temperature magnetization is a Cantor-function. The zero-field specific heat behaves at T[MATH] at low temperature with [MATH] varying continuously between zero and one.

A Soluble Quasi-Crystalline Magnetic Model: The XY Quantum Spin Chain

J. M. Luck, Theo M. Nieuwenhuizen

We consider the quantum XY spin chain with quasi-periodic two-valued exchange couplings and a uniform transverse field. The equivalence of the system with a free fermionic model permits a detailed analysis of its thermodynamics. The zero-temperature magnetization is a Cantor function of the applied field. The zero-field specific heat and susceptibility have a power-law behaviour at low temperature, modulated by periodic amplitudes. The critical exponents interpolate continuously between those of the periodic and of the random model.

Two-dimensional quantum-spin-1/2 XXZ magnet in zero magnetic field: Global thermodynamics from renormalisation group theory

Ozan S. Sarıyer

Phase diagram, critical properties and thermodynamic functions of the two-dimensional field-free quantum-spin-1/2 XXZ model has been calculated globally using a numerical renormalisation group theory. The nearest-neighbour spin-spin correlations and entanglement properties, as well as internal energy and specific heat are calculated globally at all temperatures for the whole range of exchange interaction anisotropy, from XY limit to Ising limits, for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases. We show that there exists long-range (quasi-long-range) order at low-temperatures, and the low-lying excitations are gapped (gapless) in the Ising-like easy-axis (XY-like easy-plane) regime. Besides, we identify quantum phase transitions at zero-temperature.

Using the mean-field Jordan-Wigner transformation analysis, we have studied the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XY chain with Z-directional uniform long-range interactions in the external magnetic field. We have obtained such results as the Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, specific heat, magnetization and isothermal susceptibility. We also discuss the first and second-order phase transitions of the system at a finite temperature. Our results agree with results published in literature.

Effect of a magnetic field on the thermodynamics of diluteXYquantum chains

M. Macciò, A. Rettori, M. G. Pini

We investigate the effect of a magnetic field along the z\ensuremath{\rightarrow} direction on the magnetization, longitudinal susceptibility, and specific heat of the dilute XY quantum chain. The introduction of the field emphasizes the effect of the strong discretization of the modes giving rise to anomalies in the field dependence of the thermodynamic properties which should be experimentally observable at low temperatures.

Thermodynamics of dilute XY quantum chains

It is shown that the specific heat and susceptibility (${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\mathrm{zz}}$) of the dilute $\mathrm{XY}$ $\mathrm{s}\mathrm{p}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{n}\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2}$ chain can be calculated by summing over the finite segments. At low temperatures the specific heat is determined by segments with an even number of spins, whereas the susceptibility is determined by segments with an odd number of spins. At low temperatures the specific heat behaves as ${(\frac{{T}_{0}}{T})}^{\frac{5}{4}}\mathrm{exp}[\ensuremath{-}2{(\frac{{T}_{0}}{T})}^{\frac{1}{2}}]$, where ${T}_{0}$ is a characteristic temperature in the dilute spin system.

Anisotropic quantum spin chains

J. Kurmann, Gerhard H. Muller, H. Thomas +2 more

We have studied two models for anisotropic quantum spin chains. (i) XY-chain with a field in the plane: The magnetization of the ferromagnet behaves as h1/3 for small fields, in agreement with scaling laws. The antiferromagnet shows a critical field at which the ground state is a simple Néel state and which separates power law from exponential decay of spatial correlations. (ii) Anisotropic XY-chain: The dynamic z-component spin correlation function can be decomposed into a spin wave and a soliton contribution. The nature of quantum soliton excitations is studied and their form compared to soliton solutions of classical equations of motion.
