Pressure Effects of Cs Lines Due to a Mixture of Two Rare Gases

Abstract

An experimental study of the additivity of the phase shift or perturbation energies produced by foreign-gas perturbers in collision with an optical atom is made by measuring the shift and the half-width of the second to the seventh doublet of the Cs absorption series, under various pressures and with various concentration ratios of a mixture of He and Ar. The shift produced by the mixture is found to be about the average of the shifts of the separate gases. The broadening of the fourth absorption doublet of Cs produced by the mixture of He and Ar is about $\frac{3}{4}$ of the sum of broadenings due to the constituents.

Pressure Effects of Rare Gases on the Second Doublet of Rubidium Principal Series

Ny Tsi-Zé, Shang-Yi Ch'en

The displacement, asymmetry, and broadening of the second doublet of the rubidium principal series perturbed by pure helium, neon and argon up to 13 atmospheres are observed. The displacement as well as the broadening of the doublet components are not the same. The $^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ component shifts and broadens more conspicuously than the $^{2}P_{1\frac{1}{2}}$ component (an exception being the broadening by argon). The departure from linear relationship between the shift and the density of the perturbing gas is quite manifest. Both for helium and for neon the line contour shows a distinct asymmetry towards the violet, while for argon the line contour shows a very strong red asymmetry. For helium and neon the violet asymmetries of the $^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ component are stronger than that of the $^{2}P_{1\frac{1}{2}}$ component; the reverse is true for argon. The relationship between the half-width and the relative density is linear for foreign gas concentrations of relative densities up to 8 so far applied.

Calculated pressure broadening and shift for the sodium atom perturbed by rare gases. II. Two-photon 3S−nS transitions ( n=6−9 )

Chao Wu, William C. Stwalley

Our recent treatment [Phys. Rev. A 18, 1066 (1978)] of the broadening and shift of alkali-metal-atom two-photon $S\ensuremath{-}S$ transitions is applied to the Na $3S\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{nS}$ transitions ($n=6\ensuremath{-}9$) perturbed by Ar, Kr, and Xe rare gases. Comparison with recent experimental data [A. Flusberg et al., Phys. Rev. A 19, 1607 (1979)] on the Na-Ar pair for $n\ensuremath{\le}7$ shows good agreement. However, for transitions to $n>8$ the calculated pressure effects no longer agree well with experimental data; presumably the pressure effects cannot be adequately described by a simple two-body long-range impact theory.

PRESSURE BROADENING OF D_1 OF CS IN NOBLE GASES OF LOW PRESSURE

WU Zhenghu

Using semiconductor laser of narrow line width, we obtain the absorption spectral profiles of D_1 (6S_1/2 → 6P_1/2) of Cs in a high magnetic field in different kinds and at different pressures of noble gases. It is shown that the broadening is linearly proportional to the foreign gas pressure lower than 1. 33 × 10 ̄4Pa in our experiment. We get coefficients of broadening by fitting to the Voigt profile.

Theory of Pressure Effects on Alkali Doublet Lines

Lewis S. Klein, Henry Margenau

Experiments have revealed that pressures of noble gases cause bands to appear in both the red and violet wings of the alkali doublet lines. The present paper is devoted to the explanation of these bands and to the shift and shape of the doublet lines which they accompany. In order to examine various qualitative proposals previously put forth to this end, we first ascertain the validity of the statistical theory as applied to the magnetic substates of the alkali resonance lines and develop a criterion for adiabaticity. This criterion indicates that the earlier theories are inadequate. Shift and broadening of the two components of the alkali doublet lines are then calculated as functions of noble gas density by considering the van der Waals energy perturbation due to n simultaneously acting perturbers. The conclusion, which is in agreement with experiments, is that the P322 resonance line is shifted and broadened more than the 2P½ resonance line at moderate pressures. A phenomenological approach is used to construct a more reasonable theory of the ``satellite'' bands. In the absence of reliable knowledge concerning the repulsive portions of the interaction curves, only a semiquantitative understanding of the data is achieved.

Broadening and Shift of the Second Doublet of the Rubidium Absorption Series Under Different Pressures of Argon and Helium

Shang-Yi Ch'en, D. Kohler

The shift and broadening of the second doublet of the principal series of rubidium produced by argon and by helium were studied for pressures up to 123.5 atmospheres (rd 52) and up to 97.5 atmospheres (rd 44), respectively. The red shift produced by argon gives a linear relationship with its relative density, rd. The slopes for both components of the doublet are 2.95 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$/rd. The violet shift produced by helium in the high pressure range is greater than linear with the rd. The $^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ component is shifted more than the $^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ component.Argon shows a nicely linear broadening for both components over the entire range of rd. For the $^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ component the broadening is 2.28 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$/rd and for the $^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ component it is 2.11 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$/rd. Helium appears to give a definite quadratic broadening, particularly for the $^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ component.

Pressure Shifts of High-Series Spectral Lines and Cross Sections for Scattering of Very Slow Electrons from Rare-Gas Atoms. II

M. H. Choudhury, Jeremy Dunning-Davies

In an earlier paper, one of the authors gave a completely quantum-mechanical treatment of the pressure shift, due to foreign atoms, of high-series spectral lines of alkali-metal atoms. The same basic method of solving the Schr\"odinger equation for the system using perturbation techniques is adopted again. However, in the present paper, the center-of-mass motion is treated separately, allowing the use of more realistic distribution functions when averaging over the center-of-mass motion of the foreign atoms. By using a Boltzmann-type distribution law, it is shown that, for foreign atoms exhibiting a red shift, the observed shift decreases with increase in temperature, but no analogous result is found for atoms exhibiting a blue shift.
