Abstract

We present a detailed derivation of the trace formula for a general Hamiltonian with two degrees of freedom where one of them is canonical and the other a spin. Our derivation starts from the semiclassical formula for the propagator in a basis formed by the product of a canonical and a spin coherent states and is valid in the limit ℏ→0, j→∞ with jℏ constant. The trace formula, obtained by taking the trace and the Fourier transform of the coherent state propagator, is compared to others found in the literature.

The semiclassical coherent state propagator for systems with spin

A. D. Ribeiro, Marcus A. M. de Aguiar, A. F. R. de Toledo Piza

We derive the semiclassical limit of the coherent state propagator for systems with two degrees of freedom of which one degree of freedom is canonical and the other a spin. Systems in this category include those involving spin–orbit interactions and the Jaynes–Cummings model in which a single electromagnetic mode interacts with many independent two-level atoms. We construct a path integral representation for the propagator of such systems and derive its semiclassical limit. As special cases we consider separable systems, the limit of very large spins and the case of spin-1/2.

Semiclassical trace formulae using coherent states

B. Mehlig, Michael Wilkinson

We derive semiclassical trace formulae including Gutzwiller's trace formula using coherent states. This formulation has several advantages over the usual coordinate-space formulation. Using a coherent-state basis makes it immediately obvious that classical periodic orbits make separate contributions to the trace of the quantum-mechanical time evolution operator. In addition, our approach is manifestly canonically invariant at all stages, and leads to the simplest possible derivation of Gutzwiller's formula.

Trace formula for spin chains

Daniel Waltner, Petr A. Braun, Maram Akila +1 more

While detailed information about the semiclassics for single-particle systems is available, much less is known about the connection between quantum and classical dynamics for many-body systems. As an example, we focus on spin chains which are of considerable conceptual and practical importance. We derive a trace formula for coupled spin $j$ particles which relates the quantum energy levels to the classical dynamics. Our derivation is valid in the limit $j\rightarrow\infty$ with $j\hbar={\rm const.}$ and applies to time-continuous as well as to periodically driven dynamics. We provide a simple explanation why the Solari-Kochetov phase can be omitted if the correct classical Hamiltonian is chosen.

Semiclassical Propagator in the Generalized Coherent-State Representation

Thiago F. Viscondi, Adriano Grigolo, Marcus A. M. de Aguiar

A detailed derivation of the semiclassical propagator in the generalized coherent-state representation is performed by applying the saddle-point method to a path integral over the classical phase space. With the purpose of providing greater accessibility and applicability to the developed formalism, a brief review of the generalized concept of coherent states is presented, in which three examples of coherent-state sets are examined, namely, the canonical, spin, and SU(n) bosonic coherent states.
