Abstract

A new technique for constructing the Quasi Cyclic Low density Parity Check (QC-LDPC) codes based on splitting rows into sub rows method is proposed. The proposed QC-LDPC code, at BER of 10-6achieves 0.1dB coding gain over the PEG-LDPC codes. Moreover, in the high Eb/ N0region, the proposed code with girths 16 and 20 respectively, achieve 0.056 dB and 0.27 dB at a BER of 10-5over the randomly constructed code. Simulation results portray that large girth QC-LDPC codes achieve a 0.1dB coding gain over randomly constructed codes and perform 1.3dB from the Shannon-limit at a BER of-6with a code rate of 0.89 for block length of 1332.

A new Quasi-Cyclic low density parity check codes

Abid Yahya, Othman Sidek, Mohd Fadzli Mohd Salleh +1 more

This paper proposes a new technique for constructing the Quasi-Cyclic low density parity check (QC-LDPC) codes based on row division method. The new codes offer more flexibility in term of girth, code rates and codeword length. In this method of code construction, the rows are used to form as the distance graph. Then they are transformed to a parity-check matrix in order to acquire the desired girth. The new QC-LDPC codes show good bit-error rate performance as compared to the renowned Mackay codes for given values of Eb/Noby 0.12 dB at BER of10-7.

Design of good quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

Xu Dan

The existing design of quasi-cyclic(QC) low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes has not considered the problems of short length girths and the rows' dependency. The first problem leads to the BER performance of QC LDPC codes to be much poorer than that of randomly constructed LDPC codes, while the second problem leads to the difficulty of construction of generator matrices from parity-check matrices. To solve the first problem, the constraint conditions for designing the QC LDPC codes are proposed, and the dimension and shift factors of the circulant matrices of the given sparse parity-check matrix are adjusted according to the test results of both girth 4 and girth 6.To solve the second problem,an approach of irregular QC LDPC codes is proposed. The proposed approach is to replace some sub-matrices by zero matrices and identity matrices at special positions in the given sparse parity-check matrix so as to get a nonsingular square matrix for the construction of the generator matrix.Though adopting bidiagonal submatrices in parity-check matrix can solve the rows' dependency problem, many code words with low weights will occur, which leads to the BER performance can not be better by increasing code lengths.Examples are provided for the proposed design of QC LDPC codes, and computer simulation results show that the proposed QC LDPC codes achieve good BER performance.

An Improved Construction Method of QC-LDPC Codes Based on the PEG Algorithm

Liqun Huang, Yuliang Wang, Ping Gong

Due to quasi-cyclic structure of parity-check matrices, Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) codes reduce hardware requirements, and thus they have a higher practical value than random LDPC codes. This paper proposes an improved construction method of QC-LDPC based on PEG Algorithm, and the girth of the QC-LDPC codes has an increase of 2. Firstly, a base matrix is generated by the PEG algorithm, and then the base matrix is expanded using the unit circle permutation matrix, at the same time, the short loop of the base matrix is eliminated. This approach has the advantages of the PEG algorithm and the QC-LDPC codes, and simulation results show that bit error rate (BER) performance of the QC-LDPC codes presented in this paper is the same as or exceeds the one of randomly constructed LDPC codes.

Design and performance evaluation of low complexity encoding methods for LDPC codes

Ambar Bajpai, Lunchakorn Wuttisittikulkij, Piya Kovintavewat

There is an important breakthrough in the field of forward error correction techniques, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. These codes have potential to approach the Shannon limit with reliable performance on a given channel, known as the channel capacity. Recently, researchers pay much more attention towards LDPC codes because its performance is better than Turbo codes. However, the LDPC code is the best when it is an irregular code and uses with a very large block-length. Although, the short block-length LDPC codes perform not so well, they are easy to implement in various practical applications. Therefore, there is still a demand of new development on the encoding side of LDPC codes for various ranges of code rate and code length so as to capable of using in many applications. This thesis proposes the development of quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes for column weight 3. In the first part of this thesis, we propose a new construction algorithm of QC-LDPC codes for medium to large block-length by combining QC-LDPC codes of small block-length as their component codes, via Chinese remainder theorem (CRT). Such component codes were constructed by permuting each column block sequentially to attain the desire local girth. After combining all component codes to generate an expanded parity-check matrix, the resulting girth is greater than or at least equal to the maximum girth of the component codes. Simulation results show that our proposed construction method of the parity-check matrix significantly outperforms the other well-known existing methods in terms of low error-floor, simple structure, high performance, and can reduce encoding complexity. In addition, this thesis also proposes two new construction methods for QC-LDPC codes, namely a base matrix method and a subtraction based method. A base matrix based method is a simple, less computational complexity method for constructing the exponent matrix (3, K) of girth 8, 10 and 12 of QC-LDPC codes. Another method is a subtraction method, which has a similar exponent matrix as a base matrix method and has a girth at least 8. Results indicate that the LDPC codes constructed from these two methods have flexibility for arbitrary block-column length K and have a similar BER performance if compared to existing methods.

Construction of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check codes using Hamming codewords

Haijing Zhong, Shancheng Zhao, Li Chen +1 more

In this paper, we propose a new approach to construct quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes using Hamming codewords of weight three, namely the HM-QC-LDPC codes. Thanks to the distance property of Hamming codes, length four cycles are avoided from the Tanner graph of the constructed codes, resulting in codes of girth six. This approach can be further extended to construct QC-LDPC codes of girth eight. Our numerical results show that the proposal has a better cycle profile than the progressive-edge-growth (PEG) constructed codes, and consequently prevails in performance. Moreover, the constructed QC-LDPC code prevails the LDPC code of the IEEE802.22 standard by 0.2 dB at the bit error rate (BER) of 10-8when the codeword length is within hundreds of bits, making it a promising candidate for scenarios where strict decoding latency is imposed.

Flexible Construction of High-Girth QC-LDPC Codes

Gabofetswe Malema

This article presents a highly flexible method for constructing high-girth quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes. The proposed algorithm constructs a Tanner graph formed by connecting groups of rows (check nodes) and columns (variable nodes) of the constructed code. To obtain a sub-matrix structure, rows and columns are divided into groups of equal sizes. Rows and columns in a group are connected in their numerical (positional) order to obtain a cyclic structure. Connected rows and columns must satisfy the desired minimum cycle length. We present conditions that guarantee desired girths. The proposed algorithm is by far more flexible in constructing a wide range (rates and lengths) of regular and irregular QC-LDPC codes compared to existing methods. The algorithm, which has linear complexity with respect to the number of rows or columns, provides an easy and fast way to construct QC-LDPC codes. Constructed codes show good bit error rate performances.
