Four-state nonstationary models in multistate Landau-Zener theory

Abstract

A dynamic four-state system is considered within the context of multistate Landau-Zener theory. It is shown that the theory accounts very well for the time-dependent state populations and final transition probabilities even in cases when multiple crossings appear in close vicinity of each other. This is also true for multiple paths systems when the phases are appropriately accounted for. It is found that transitions may take place also between diabatic states that do not couple directly and that the dynamics of such crossings may be accurately described within the multichannel Landau-Zener theory.

Perturbative approach to time-dependent quantum systems and applications to one-crossing multistate Landau-Zener models

Rongyu Hu, Chen Sun

We formulate a perturbative approach for studying a class of multilevel time-dependent quantum systems with constant off-diagonal couplings and diabatic energies being odd functions of time. Applying this approach to a general multistate Landau-Zener (MLZ) model with all diabatic levels crossing at one point (named the one-crossing MLZ model), we derive analytical formulas of all its transition probabilities up to fourth order in the couplings. For one-crossing MLZ models it is difficult to obtain such analytical results by other kinds of approximation methods; thus, these perturbative results can serve as reliable benchmarks for future studies of any one-crossing MLZ models that have not been exactly solved.

Analytical results for state-to-state transition probabilities in the multistate Landau-Zener model by nonstationary perturbation theory

M. V. Volkov, Valentin N. Ostrovsky

Multistate generalizations of Landau-Zener model are studied by summing entire series of perturbation theory. A technique for analysis of the series is developed. Analytical expressions for probabilities of survival at the diabatic potential curves with extreme slope are proved. Degenerate situations are considered when there are several potential curves with extreme slope. Expressions for some state-to-state transition probabilities are derived in degenerate cases.

Effect of decay of the final states on the probabilities of the Landau-Zener transitions in multistate nonintegrable models

Rajesh K. Malla, M. É. Raǐkh

For a Landau-Zener transition in a two-level system, the probability for a particle, initially in the first level, to survive the transition and to remain in the first level, does not depend on whether or not the second level is broadened [V. M. Akulin and W. P. Schleich, Phys. Rev. A 46, 4110 (1992)]. In other words, the seminal Landau-Zener result applies regardless of the broadening of the second level. The same question for the multistate Landau-Zener transition is addressed in the present paper. While for integrable multistate models, where the transition does not involve interference of the virtual paths, it can be argued that the independence of the broadening persists, we focus on nonintegrable models involving interference. For a simplest four-state model, which allows an analytical treatment, we demonstrate that the decay of the excited states affects the survival probability provided that the widths of the final states are different.

Exact transition probabilities in a 6-state Landau–Zener system with path interference

N A Sinitsyn

We identify a nontrivial multistate Landau–Zener (LZ) model for which transition probabilities between any pair of diabatic states can be determined analytically and exactly. In the semiclassical picture, this model features the possibility of interference of different trajectories that connect the same initial and final states. Hence, transition probabilities are generally not described by the incoherent successive application of the LZ formula. We discuss reasons for integrability of this system and provide numerical tests of the suggested expression for the transition probability matrix.

Nonstationary multistate Coulomb and multistate exponential models for nonadiabatic transitions

Valentin N. Ostrovsky

The nonstationary Schr\"odinger equation is considered in a finite basis of states. The model Hamiltonian matrix corresponds to a single diabatic potential curve with a Coulombic $\ensuremath{\sim}1/t$ time dependence. An arbitrary number of other diabatic potential curves are flat, i.e., time independent and have arbitrary energies. Related states are coupled by constant interactions with the Coulomb state. The resulting nonstationary Schr\"odinger equation is solved by the method of contour integral. Probabilities of transitions to any other state are obtained as $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{t}\ensuremath{\infty}$ in a simple analytical form for the case when the Coulomb state is populated initially (at instant of time $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{t}+0).$ The formulas apply both to the cases when a horizontal diabatic potential curve is crossed by the Coulomb one and to a noncrossing situation. In the limit of weak coupling, the transition probabilities are interpreted in terms of a sequence of pairwise Landau-Zener-type transitions. Mapping of the Coulomb model onto an exactly solvable exponential multistate model is established. For the special two-state case, the well-known Nikitin model is recovered.

The quest for solvable multistate Landau-Zener models

Nikolai A Sinitsyn, Vladimir Y Chernyak

Abstract Recently, integrability conditions (ICs) in mutistate Landau-Zener (MLZ) theory were proposed [1]. They describe common properties of all known solved systems with linearly time-dependent Hamiltonians. Here we show that ICs enable efficient computer assisted search for new solvable MLZ models that span complexity range from several interacting states to mesoscopic systems with many-body dynamics and combinatorially large phase space. This diversity suggests that nontrivial solvable MLZ models are numerous. In addition, we refine the formulation of ICs and extend the class of solvable systems to models with points of multiple diabatic level crossing.
