Phase diagrams of the two-dimensional Hubbard and t - J models by a variational Monte Carlo method

Abstract

We use a variational Monte Carlo technique to study the ground state of the two-dimensional Hubbard and t-J models on a square lattice. We use a trial wave function that allows a continuous description of the paramagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and superconducting phases, as well as the coexistence of these phases, with no a priori constraint on double occupancy. The phase diagram of both models is given for intermediate coupling (U=10t). We show that the apparent discrepancies between the two models, that appeared in previous variational Monte Carlo studies, are not present when this sufficiently good variational wave function is used. The two models are in good qualitative agreement. We find that except at half-filling a pure antiferromagnetic phase does not exist but is always in coexistence with a d-wave superconducting phase, and is followed by a pure d-wave superconducting phase at doping up to \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\sim}0.3. The staggered magnetization and the superconducting gap are measured, and a comparison with other analytical or numerical results is made.

Variational Monte Carlo study of incommensurate antiferromagnetic phases in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Thierry Giamarchi, C. Lhuillier

We use a variational Monte Carlo technique to study the ground state of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice. We study the stability of the usual commensurate antiferromagnetic phase against the formation of domain walls for various system sizes, band filling, and Hubbard repulsion. An instability towards diagonal domain walls is found for the values of the Hubbard repulsion studied (U=4-10t). We compute the condensation energy of the holes in walls. Such an incommensurate antiferromagnetic phase is much stabler than any other solution. Whether paramagnetic or purely superconducting, but superconductivity is found still to coexist with incommensurate antiferromagnetism. We carefully compare our results with those of the Hartree-Fock model and shed some light on the limitations of the Hartree-Fock solutions.

Variational ground states of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

D. Baeriswyl, David Eichenberger, M. Z. Menteshashvili

Recent refinements of analytical and numerical methods have improved our understanding of the ground-state phase diagram of the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model. Here, we focus on variational approaches, but comparisons with both quantum cluster and Gaussian Monte Carlo methods are also made. Our own ansatz leads to an antiferromagnetic ground state at half filling with a slightly reduced staggered order parameter (as compared to simple mean-field theory). Away from half filling, we find d-wave superconductivity, but confined to densities where the Fermi surface passes through the antiferromagnetic zone boundary (if hopping between both nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour sites is considered). Our results agree surprisingly well with recent numerical studies using the quantum cluster method. An interesting trend is found by comparing gap parameters Δ (antiferromagnetic or superconducting) obtained with different variational wave functions. Δ varies by an order of magnitude and thus cannot be taken as a characteristic energy scale. In contrast, the order parameter is much less sensitive to the degree of sophistication of the variational schemes, at least at and near half filling.

Coexistence and Mutual Exclusion of Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism, and Phase Separation in Hubbard Model

Kenji Kobayashi, Hisatoshi Yokoyama

In view of cuprate superconductors, interplay between antiferromagnetism (AF) and superconductivity (SC) is studied for the square-lattice Hubbard model with a diagonal transfer t , using a variational Monte Carlo method. In the trial wave function, essential factors of Mott physics and band renormalization are introduced. It is found that whether AF and SC become coexistent or competitive is sensitive to the values of model parameters, U/t, t /t, and δ (doping rate).Furthermore, in case AF gap is finite, namely, in pure AF or coexisting cases, the state is unstable against phase separation.

Phase diagram and mechanism of superconductivity in a strongly correlated electron system

Takashi Yanagisawa, Mitake Miyazaki, Yamaji K.

We investigate the phase diagram of two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model by employing the optimization variational Monte Carlo method. The 2D Hubbard model is the most simple electronic model for cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The phase diagram consists of three regions; they are antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) region, superconducting (SC) region and the coexistent region of superconductivity and antiferromgantism. The phase diagram obtained by numerical calculations well agrees with the experimental phase diagram for high-temperature cuprates. We mainly focused on the effect of $t'$ on the antiferromagnetic (AF) correlation and the AFI region. The area of the AF phase increases when we include $t'$ and thus the pure $d$-wave SC phase decreases. The AFI phase near half filling decreases as $|t'|$ increases.

Stripe and superconducting order competing in the Hubbard model on a square lattice studied by a combined variational Monte Carlo and tensor network method

Andrew S. Darmawan, Yusuke Nomura, Youhei Yamaji +1 more

The long-studied Hubbard model is one of the simplest models of copper-oxide superconductors. However, the connection between the model and the experimental phase diagram is still under debate, in particular regarding the existence and extent of the $d$-wave superconducting phase. Recent rapid progress in improving the accuracy of numerical solvers has opened a way to answer this question reliably. Here, we study the hole-doping concentration ($\ensuremath{\delta}$) dependence of the Hubbard model in the ground states on a square lattice at strong coupling $U/t=10$, for the on-site interaction $U$ and the transfer $t$, using a variational Monte Carlo method. The method, which combines tensor network and Lanczos methods on top of Pfaffian wave functions, reveals a rich phase diagram, in which many orders compete severely and degenerate within the energy range of $0.01t$. We have identified distinct phases including a uniform $d$-wave superconducting phase for $0.17\ensuremath{\lesssim}\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.22$ and a stripe charge/spin ordered phase for $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.17$ with the stripe period depending on $\ensuremath{\delta}$, together with presumable spatially coexisting antiferromagnetic and stripe order for $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.07$ and coexisting stripe and $d$-wave superconductivity for $0.07\ensuremath{\lesssim}\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.17$. The present, improved method revealed a wider region of a charge uniform superconducting phase than the previous studies and shows a qualitative similarity to the phase diagram of the cuprate superconductors. The superconducting order parameter is largest at doping of around $\ensuremath{\delta}=0.17$ in the ground state, which undergoes phase transitions from an inhomogeneous to a uniform state.

Superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the two-dimensional Hubbard model: A variational study

David Eichenberger, D. Baeriswyl

A variational ground state of the repulsive Hubbard model on a square lattice is investigated numerically for an intermediate coupling strength $(U=8t)$ and for moderate sizes (from $6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}6$ to $10\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}10$). Our ansatz is superior to other widely used variational wave functions. The results for order parameters and correlation functions provide insight into the antiferromagnetic state at half-filling as well as strong evidence for a superconducting phase away from half-filling.
