Integrable chain of electrons coupled with squeezed phonons

Valery A. Ivanov, M. Ye. Zhuravlev, Yoshimasa Murayama +1 more

The exact wave function for a one-dimensional chain of electrons coupled with squeezed phonons is obtained. The ground state energy and the gap in the electron spectrum are calculated. It is shown that there exists an optimal phonon number n ph ≠0 for the ground state of the system. The results are generalized for a system of correlated electrons.

Energetics and structure of Peierls-Hubbard chains in ground and excited states

Victor A. Kuprievich

The stationary states of a half-filled Peierls-Hubbard chain are calculated. To describe electron correlations, the wave functions as antisymmetrized products of strongly orthogonal geminals are used; wave functions and bond lengths are determined self-consistently by the variational method in an N=50 ring. The neutral soliton pair ${S}^{0}$${S}^{0}$ is obtained as corresponding to a local total-energy minimum above the perfectly dimerized ground state. The charged soliton pair ${S}^{+}$${S}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ refers to the minimum in the subspace of wave functions which are odd with respect to charge conjugation. The creation energies for each of the pairs are estimated as functions of Hubbard parameter U and compared with the exact excitation energies of the uniform Hubbard chain. The electron correlation is shown to make the in-gap ${S}^{0}$${S}^{0}$ state stable even for a moderate electron-lattice coupling; the soliton width turns out to be much smaller than that in the U=0 model and comparable with the lattice constant. Applicability of the results to polyacetylene is discussed.

Valence-bond analysis of half-filled dimerized Hubbard chains

Anna Painelli, Alberto Girlando

The diagrammatic valence-bond technique is adopted to investigate one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard chains with long-range e-e interactions and alternating charge-transfer integrals. Exact results for finite-size systems with different boundary conditions are carefully extrapolated to the infinite-chain limit. In addition to various ground-state properties, such as bond-charge-density wave and bond-order amplitude, we calculate the optical gap and the corresponding oscillator strength. We introduce adiabatic phonons able to modulate on-site energies and investigate the stability of the system with respect to site-charge-density wave distortion. We also evaluate the response of the electronic system to the perturbation induced by adiabatic phonons which modulate charge-transfer integrals, and calculate the corresponding screening of vibrational frequencies.

We note that the exactly solvable electron-phonon Hamiltonian presented in that paper can be solved by a more direct route via the Lang-Firsov transformation.
