Mixed-state entanglement and quantum communication

Michał Horodecki, Paweł Horodecki, Ryszard Horodecki

We present basics of mixed-state entanglement theory. The first part of the article is devoted to mathematical characterizations of entangled states. In second part we discuss the question of using mixed-state entanglement for quantum communication. In particular, a type of entanglement that is not directly useful for quantum communcation (called bound entanglement) is analysed in detail.

A study of entanglement in quantum information theory

Frank Verstraete

Although the concept of quantum entanglement has been known for about seventy years, it only recently quit the realms of meta-theoretical discussions when it was discovered how entanglement can be exploited to compute and communicate with an unprecedented power. The primary motivation of the work presented in this thesis has been to contribute to the big e#ort that has been done during the last decade to understand and quantify quantum entanglement. We have developed advanced techniques of linear and multilinear algebra to investigate and classify entangled pure and mixed quantum states, and discussed some novel applications in the field of quantum information theory. The results presented in this thesis are mainly of interest from a fundamental point a view: entanglement is the characteristic trait of quantum mechanics, the one that enforces its entire departure from classical lines of thought [186]. It is however a real privilege that fundamental research in quantum information theory bears the tools of tomorrow's electrical engineers: the ongoing miniaturization of electronic components will soon reach a scale where quantum mechanical e#ects play a major role.

An introduction to the theory of quantum entanglement

Fei Shao -

Quantum entangled states play very important roles in quantum information processing, such as quantum teleportation, dense coding, error correction, cryptography, and computation. The theory of entanglement mainly concerns the characterization of quantum entanglement and the classification of quantum states,as well as its applications in quantum information processing. We present some basic concepts and results, including:the relationship between locality and reality in quantum mechanics and Bell inequalities, and that between Bell inequalities and the separability of quantum states;the definition of separability for pure and mixed quantum states, and some separability criteria such as the positive map approach, positive partial transpose, reduction criterion, realignment, entanglement witnesses, and the covariance matrix approach and local uncertainty relations;some entanglement measures such as the entanglement of formation, concurrence, relative entropy, negativity, tangle, entanglement of assistance, and their estimation;the change in entanglement when the physical system evolves or undergoes interaction with the environment.
