Quantum state manipulation of trapped atomic ions

D. J. Wineland, C. Monroe, D. M. Meekhof +7 more

A single laser–cooled and trapped 9Be+ ion is used to investigate methods of coherent quantum–state synthesis and quantum logic. We create and characterize non–classical states of motion including ‘Schrodinger–cat’ states. A fundamental quantum logic gate is realized which uses two states of the quantized ion motion and two ion internal states as qubits. We explore some of the applications for, and problems in realizing, quantum computation based on multiple trapped ions.

Controlling Quantum Transport by State Synthesis in Ion Traps

Juan F. Poyatos, Gonzalo G. de Polavieja

A procedure to control the quantum transport between classical regions is proposed. The scheme exploits the ability to synthesize arbitrary motional states in ion traps. Quantum barriers and passages to transport can be created selecting the relevant frequencies. This technique is then applied to stabilize the quantum motion onto classical structures or alter the dynamical tunneling in nonintegrable systems.

Quantum-state synthesis of multimode bosonic fields: Preparation of arbitrary states of two-dimensional vibrational motion of trapped ions

G. Drobný, B. Hladký, Vladimír Bužek

We present a universal algorithm for an efficient deterministic preparation of an arbitrary two-mode bosonic state. In particular, we discuss in detail preparation of entangled states of a two-dimensional vibrational motion of a trapped ion via a sequence of laser-stimulated Raman transitions. Our formalism can be generalized for multimode bosonic fields. We examine stability of our algorithm with respect to a technical noise.
