Revival and fractional revival in the quantum dynamics of SU(1,1) coherent states

Abstract

We have used a generic two-mode Hamiltonian with two associated time scales to study the evolution of generalized SU(1,1) coherent states, in particular the pair and Perelomov coherent states, which have been realized in many systems such as radiation fields, trapped ions, and phonons. We have found that their dynamics does not depend on the ratio of these time scales but is instead determined crucially by the difference in photon numbers of the two modes. This is in stark contrast to the previously studied harmonic-oscillator coherent states and can be attributed to the different nature of the underlying algebra. We provide analytical results for their revival and fractional revival along with numerical plots of the autocorrelation function and the quadrature distribution and demonstrate the formation of Schr\"odinger cats. The results are extremely sensitive to the Casimir invariant and the complex parameters characterizing SU(1,1) coherent states.

Fractional revivals in systems with two time scales

G. S. Agarwal, J. Banerji

We examine the dynamical evolution of wave packets in a large class of quantum systems where two quantum numbers determine the energy spectrum and consequently the dynamical behavior. Using a generic Hamiltonian, we study the formation of coherent structures. The ratio of two time scales as well as the symmetry of the initial wave packet decisively determines the revival and fractional revivals of the system for which we give analytical results. The theory is applicable to a wide class of systems from diatomic molecules to ions in two-dimensional traps and two interacting Bose condensates.

Fractional revivals, multiple-Schrödinger-cat states, and quantum carpets in the interaction of a qubit with N qubits

Shane Dooley, Timothy P. Spiller

We study the dynamics of a system comprised of a single qubit interacting equally with $N$ qubits (a ``spin star'' system). Although this model can be solved exactly, the exact solution does not give much intuition for the dynamics of the model. Here, we find an approximation that gives some insight into the dynamics for a particular class of initial spin-coherent states of the $N$ qubits. We find an effective Hamiltonian for the system that is a finite Kerr (one-axis twisting) Hamiltonian for the $N+1$ qubits. The initial spin-coherent state evolves to spin-squeezed states on short time scales, and to ``multiple-Schr\"odinger-cat'' states (superpositions of many spin-coherent states) on longer time scales, a manifestation of the phenomenon of fractional revivals of the initial state. The evolution of the system is visualized with phase-space plots ($Q$ functions) that, when plotted against time, reveal a ``quantum carpet'' pattern. Of particular interest is the fact that our approximation captures the qualitative features of the model even for small values of $N$. This suggests the possibility of observing the phenomenon of fractional revival in this model for systems of few qubits.

Non-linear wave packet dynamics of coherent states of various symmetry groups

J. Banerji, G. S. Agarwal

We present a comparative study of the non-linear wave packet dynamics of two-mode coherent states of the Heisenberg-Weyl group, the SU(1,1) group and the SU(2) group under the action of a model anharmonic Hamiltonian. In each case, we find certain generic signatures of non-linear evolution such as quick onset of decoherence followed by Schrödinger cat formation and revival. We also report important differences in the evolution of coherent states belonging to different symmetry groups.

Fractional-Time Jaynes-Cummings Model: Unitary Description of its Quantum Dynamics, Inverse Problem and Photon Statistics

Thiago T. Tsutsui, Danilo Cius, Antonio S. M. de Castro +1 more

We analyze the quantum dynamics of the fractional-time Jaynes-Cummings model using a recent unitary framework for the fractional-time Schrödinger equation. We examine how the fractional derivative order $α$ influences non-classical features under different initial conditions. For an initial Fock state, fractional evolution introduces transient dynamics and heightened sensitivity to coupling strength. Through an inverse problem approach, we interpret these effects as arising from an effective time-dependent coupling with a strong initial pulse. For an initial coherent state, the fractional order tunes the system between dynamical regimes, with a transition at $α= 0.50 $ where standard collapse-and-revival is replaced by stable, periodic evolution. This regime enhances non-classical field properties, including stronger sub-Poissonian statistics, periodic quadrature squeezing, and the formation of Schrödinger cat states.

Dynamics of a two-mode two-photon Jaynes–Cummings model interacting with correlated SU(1, 1) coherent states

Christopher C. Gerry, Ronald F. Welch

We study the quantum dynamics of a two-mode two-photon Jaynes–Cummings model of a two-level atom interacting with the correlated two-mode SU(1, 1) coherent states. The collapse and revival patterns in this case are noted to be quite different from those in the case of uncorrelated coherent states and correlated pair-coherent states. As an example of the time evolution of the field statistics we show that violation of the Cauchy–Schwartz inequality by the initial field states may be nullified. We also discuss the evolution of the variance of the two-mode field quadrature operator.

Dynamics of an open quantum system interacting with a quantum environment

Athreya Shankar, S Lakshmibala, V Balakrishnan

We examine the dynamics of subsystems of bipartite and tripartite quantum systems with nonlinear Hamiltonians. We consider two models which capture the generic features of open quantum systems: a three-level atom interacting with a single-mode radiation field, and a three-level atom interacting with two field modes which do not directly interact with each other. The entanglement of specific initially unentangled states of the atom-field system is examined through the time-varying subsystem von Neumann entropy (SVNE). The counterparts of near-revivals and fractional revivals of the initial state are clearly identifiable in the SVNE in all cases where revival phenomena occur. The Mandel $Q$ parameter corresponding to the photon number of a radiation field is obtained as a function of time in both models. In those cases where revivals are absent, a time series analysis of the mean photon number reveals a variety of ergodicity properties (as manifested in return maps, recurrence-time distributions and Lyapunov exponents), depending on the strength of the nonlinearity and the degree of coherence of the initial state of the radiation field(s).
