Cascade emission and four-wave mixing parametric processes in potassium

Thomas Efthimiopoulos, M. E. Movsesyan, M. Katharakis +1 more

Strong stimulated cascade emission and coherent four-wave parametric radiations are observed. By proper observation of the excitation spectra, the cascade emission and the coherent four-wave mixing parametric processes can be identified. The effect of the buffer gas pressure on the intensity and the pulse compression of the emitted radiation were investigated. Cascade inversionless coherent radiation emission with absorption reduction and third order nonlinear susceptibility enhancement due to the presence of a strong internally generated field are discussed for the 4p–4s strong emission observed.

Radiative collision-induced photoionization

Munir Hasan Nayfeh, M. G. Payne

Semiclassical expressions of two-photon ionization of atoms induced by radiative collisions are derived. The dependence of the ionization yield on the atomic forces, field intensity, and energy gap is derived. Although absorption tends to decrease as the field intensity rises due to stimulated emission at the second crossing, the two-photon ionization yield can be nearly saturated at the first crossing, thus enhancing the absorption. Both regions, ionization in single collisions and ionization between collisions, are treated. In the latter we find that saturation of the ionization can be achieved at much reduced intensities. This process promises an extremely sensitive method for studying radiative collisions, especially when absorption or fluorescence becomes extremely weak.

Laser threshold of viscous active media in the presence of induced absorption at stimulated emission wavelength

Gleb A. Abakumov, L T Makarova, Alexander P. Simonov

A calculation is made of the stimulated emission threshold of organic dye solutions as a function of the diffusion coefficient, intensity of induced singlet–singlet or triplet–triplet absorption at the stimulated emission wavelength, steepness of the leading edge of pump pulses, and other parameters. It is shown that, if the dipole moment of a fluorescence transition is perpendicular to the dipole moments of associated induced singlet–singlet or triplet–triplet absorption transitions, the laser threshold of high–viscosity solutions is considerably lower than that of low-viscosity systems. The maximum value of the ratio of the cross sections of the singlet-singlet absorption and stimulated emission, at which a given molecule ceases to emit stimulated radiation, increases from 1 to 3 when the rotational diffusion coefficient decreases from ∞ to 0.
