On the two-photon ionization of atomic caesium: electric-dipole plus quadrupole approximation

Abstract

Calculations of the two-photon ionisation probability rates of atomic caesium are reported for incident photon energies between 19400 and 22000cm -1 . In this work the authors have taken into account the electric-dipole plus quadrupole approximation. The discrepancy between the theoretical results and experimental measurements is not explained in spite of the introduction of the quadrupole contribution as was suggested elsewhere.

On the two-photon ionisation of atomic caesium via quadrupole 6D3/2-6D5/2resonances: fine-structure effects and electron spin polarisation

M. Jaouen, A. Declémy, A. Rachman +1 more

The two-photon ionisation of caesium atoms in the spin-orbit coupling scheme is analysed when one uses the electric dipole plus quadrupole approximations. The electron spin polarisation is obtained on the allowed quadrupole resonances 6D 3/2 -6D 5/2 . Comparison with experimental results is made and a final discussion is presented.

Two-photon ionisation of caesium

Constantine E. Theodosiou, L Armstrong

The authors study the time dependence of the two-photon ionisation rate for atomic caesium calculated using a sudden approximation. For pulse lengths similar to the ones used in the measurements by Granneman and Van de Wiel (1975) second-order perturbation theory gives results different from those obtained with the authors' model. Finally they utilise molecular data to resolve the discrepancy still outstanding between theory and experiment.

Electric Quadrupole Transitions in Multiphoton Ionization

P. Lambropoulos, Gary D. Doolen, Steven P. Rountree

It is shown that even for optical frequencies the dipole approximation is not always valid in multiphoton ionization. For certain photon frequencies, we find quadrupole-dipole contributions which are several orders of magnitude larger than the usual dipole-dipole contribution to two-photon ionization.

Two-photon ionization rates of caesium for linear and circular polarization (515-455 nm)

M Klewer, M J M Beerlage, Ernst H.A. Granneman +1 more

Measurements are reported of the ratio of the ion count rates obtained in two-photon ionization of caesium atoms for linearly and circularly polarized light at the nine wavelengths of the argon-ion laser (514.5-454.5 nm). Comparison of this data with the recent theoretical values of Teague et al. (1976) and Flank et al. (1976) shows discrepancies at all photon energies except near the 7P resonance. In addition, upper limits are presented for the absolute two-photon rates in the rhodamine-6G wavelength region (563-635 nm).

Multiphoton ionisation probabilities of multiple continua in alkali atoms

M Aymar, Michele Crance

By using a perturbative treatment based on the central field approximation, the authors have calculated multiphoton ionisation probabilities in several cases of experimental interest (two-, three- and four-photon ionisation of the caesium and potassium ground states at the doubled Nd glass laser frequency and one-, two- and three-photon ionisation of some s, p, d and caesium Rydberg states). Some of these probabilities have been calculated beyond the minimum non-vanishing order. They have also performed some calculations for hydrogen. The comparison of their results with previous ones obtained by analytical methods provides a good test of the numerical techniques involved in the calculations.

The 6s-6d quadrupole resonances in two-photon ionisation of caesium. Measurement of ion asymmetry and spin polarisation

H Kaminski, Joachim Keßler, K J Kollath

In the two-photon ionisation of Cs atoms resonances may be expected which correspond to a quadrupole 6s-nd transition associated with the first photon. At the 6D 5/2 and 6D 3/2 resonances the ratio of photoionisation cross sections for circularly polarised and for linearly polarised light (ion asymmetry) and the spin polarisation of the photoelectrons ejected by circularly polarised light have been measured. The ratios of the radial transition matrix elements from the 6D to the epsilon P and epsilon F continuum states were derived from the experimental results.
