Abstract

Based on the Feynman–Hellmann theorem, a new proof of the quantum virial theorem is presented. The same approach is also used to derive the virial formulation in relativistic quantum mechanics and for the case where the vector potential exists.

An elementary derivation of the quantum virial theorem from Hellmann–Feynman theorem

Y. İpekoğlu, S. Turgut

Abstract A simple proof of the quantum virial theorem that can be used in undergraduate courses is given. The proof proceeds by first showing that the energy eigenvalues of a Hamiltonian remain invariant under a scale transformation. Then invoking the Hellmann–Feynman theorem produces the final statement of the virial theorem.

Generalized Virial Theorem for Mixed State When Hamiltonians Include Coordinate-Momentum Couplings

Wang Min

The generalized Virial theorem for mixed state, derived from the generalized Hellmann–Feynman theorem, only applies to Hamiltonians in which potential of coordinates is separate from momentum energy term. In this paper we discuss Virial theorem for mixed state for some Hamiltonians with coordinate-momentum couplings in order to know their contributions to internal energy.

1 A Comment on the Virial Relation

L.D. Faddeev, L.A. Khalfin, I.V. Komarov

The validity of the virial theorem was proved by Born, Heisenberg and Jordan1 on the ground of matrix calculation and after that by Finkelstein2 on the ground of the Schro¨dinger equation. Both proofs essentially reproduced ideas of the classical approach. In the present note, a new and purely quantum mechanical derivation of this relation is given from the variational principle. The derivation is very simple and allows one to get some interesting consequences.

Three theorems of quantum mechanics and their classical counterparts

Claude Semay

Abstract The Hellmann–Feynman, virial and comparison theorems are three fundamental theorems of quantum mechanics. For the first two, counterparts exist for classical mechanics with relativistic or nonrelativistic kinetic energy. It is shown here that these three theorems are valid for classical mechanics with a nonstandard kinetic energy. This brings some information about the connections between the quantum and classical worlds. Constraints about the functional form of the kinetic energy are also discussed.

On the Extensions of Virial and Feynman - Hellman Theorem

Pratyusha Biswas Deb, S Brajamani Deceased, HC Mohanto +2 more

In the present work off diagonal and higher order extensions of Feynman-Hellman theorem is studied Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation theory for the degenerate case is redefined using a new technique. We also consider off-diagonal extension of quantum mechanical virial theorem by considering the case of linear harmonic oscillator.
