Quantum theory of nonlinear mixing in multimode fields: General theory

Abstract

A general quantum theory of nonlinear mixing in multimode fields is formulated. The theory is valid for arbitrary media and thus includes various diverse cases such as those corresponding to nonlinear mixing in multilevel systems, optical fibers, etc. Thus Zeeman coherence effects are automatically included. It is applicable to both degenerate and nondegenerate mixing experiments. The theory is in terms of two distinct sets of correlation functions of the polarization operators. One set of correlations is related to the nonlinear susceptibilities. The other set has no counterpart in semiclassical theory and is related to the quantum-mechanical fluctuations of the polarization operator. The general structure of the evolution of the density matrix of the generated fields is discussed. The quantum statistics of the generated fields can be studied in terms of the Wigner distribution function which is explicitly evaluated. Higher-order squeezing characteristics of the field are discussed. Conditions under which the quantization of the semiclassical equations is adequate are examined. The application of the quantum theory to nonlinear mixing in two-photon media is also presented. The theory is also capable of accounting for the interparticle correlations.

Quantum theory of nondegenerate multiwave mixing: General formulation

Seng‐Tiong Ho, Prem Kumar, Jeffrey H. Shapiro

In this first paper of a series on the quantum theory of nondegenerate multiwave mixing applicable to traveling-wave interaction geometries, we describe our problem formulation. We consider the explicit dynamics of a subset of the field quantization modes interacting with a system of stationary two-level atoms contained in a volume much smaller than the field quantization volume. Because we make the realistic assumption of leaving the remaining infinite set of field modes as a common thermal-field reservoir, the resulting Langevin equations contain extra decay terms due to collective spontaneous emission or super-radiance. We show that all but one of these super-radiance terms are negligible in the following two limits: (a) when the number of atoms in a diffraction volume is small; (b) when the atoms are pumped far off resonance. There is, however, an anomalous decay term which does not appear in a classical model of super-radiance based upon coherently phased atomic dipoles. The magnitude of this anomalous term is neither dependent upon the number of atoms nor on the pump-frequency detuning and may not be negligible at a low pump intensity. Neglecting the super-radiance terms, we then present a general Fourier-expansion solution technique for obtaining the atomic polarization in the presence of any number of field modes. The expansion is shown to be convergent in a commonly occurring situation in which all the strong pump modes are frequency degenerate and the remaining nondegenerate modes are all weak compared to the atomic saturation intensity. In subsequent papers of this series, we will present methods to treat, with some rigor, the spatial propagation of an interacting multimode quantum field and apply these methods to traveling-wave squeezed-state generation experiments.

Structure of multiphoton quantum optics. II. Bipartite systems, physical processes, and heterodyne squeezed states

Fabio Dell’Anno, Silvio De Siena, Fabrizio Illuminati

Extending the scheme developed for a single mode of the electromagnetic field in the preceding paper [F. Dell'Anno, S. De Siena, and F. Illuminati, Phys. Rev. A 69, 033812 (2004)], we introduce two-mode nonlinear canonical transformations depending on two heterodyne mixing angles. They are defined in terms of Hermitian nonlinear functions that realize heterodyne superpositions of conjugate quadratures of bipartite systems. The canonical transformations diagonalize a class of Hamiltonians describing nondegenerate and degenerate multiphoton processes. We determine the coherent states associated with the canonical transformations, which generalize the nondegenerate two-photon squeezed states. Such heterodyne multiphoton squeezed states are defined as the simultaneous eigenstates of the transformed, coupled annihilation operators. They are generated by nonlinear unitary evolutions acting on two-mode squeezed states. They are non-Gaussian, highly nonclassical, entangled states. For a quadratic nonlinearity the heterodyne multiphoton squeezed states define two-mode cubic phase states. The statistical properties of these states can be widely adjusted by tuning the heterodyne mixing angles, the phases of the nonlinear couplings, as well as the strength of the nonlinearity. For quadratic nonlinearity, we study the higher-order contributions to the susceptibility in nonlinear media and we suggest possible experimental realizations of multiphoton conversion processes generating the cubic-phase heterodyne squeezed states.

Theory of nonlinear optical coherences in resonant degenerate four-wave mixing

Juan Francisco Lam, Richard L. Abrams

A theory of resonantly enhanced degenerate four-wave mixing in two-level systems including the effects of atomic and photon angular momentum is presented in the absence of pump-induced saturation of the transition. It is shown that there exist three distinct quantum-mechanical amplitudes leading to the third-order polarization density. These quantum-mechanical amplitudes are shown to be sensitive to the states of polarization of the incident fields. The quantum-mechanical transport equation in the $m$ representation is used to calculate the output signal in the various regimes of laser detuning, atomic linewidth, and polarization states of the radiation field for collinear interaction.

Quantum theory of propagation of elliptically polarized light through a Kerr medium

G. S. Agarwal, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

We consider quantum-mechanically partially polarized light propagating through a Kerr-like medium. Using the usual form of the induced polarization P=A(E\ensuremath{\cdot}${\mathrm{E}}^{\mathrm{*}}$)E+B(E\ensuremath{\cdot}${\mathrm{E})\mathrm{E}}^{\mathrm{*}}$, the theory is formulated in terms of an effective Hamiltonian which is quartic in terms of the operators for two orthogonally polarized modes. Exact solutions in closed form for the Heisenberg equations of motion are obtained. These solutions are used to evaluate the physical behavior of various observables as the field propagates through a nonlinear medium. We also present explicit results for the time evolution of the input coherent and Fock states of the field. We show the generation of states that are macroscopic superposition of coherent states. We also find that if the input field is completely polarized, then due to quantum effects the output field becomes partially polarized. This is in contrast to the classical prediction and can have an important bearing on questions like topological phases of light propagating through a nonlinear medium. Numerical results for the energy in each mode, the correlation between two modes, and the higher-order correlations are presented. The input photon statistics is found to make a considerable difference in the dynamics.

Nonlinear Mixing and Multi photon Processes in the Field of Two Pumps

G. S. Agarwal, N. Nayak

A very large number of physical phenomena in the resonant interaction of atomic-molecular systems with the radiation fields can be studied by treating the atomic system as a two level system and by examining its response to the applied fields. Various perturbative results are well known. A number of recent experimental works require the knowledge of the nonperturbative response functions, when both the applied fields are strong. These include a variety of experiments on instabilities(1) in lasers involving the switching from a single mode to for example two mode operation. Similarly recent nonlinear mixing experiments, where not only four wave mixing but also higher mixing in saturating fields has been studied. Pump probe experiments have also been repeated with probes whose intensity could be large. The purpose of this paper is to formulate the general theory and use it to understand the experiments. The formulation we present is also well suited for studying the effect of collisions. Details of various collisional induced coherences in fourwave and six wave mixing etc. can be studied.
