Self-adjoint extensions of the Hamiltonian for a charged particle in the presence of a thread of magnetic flux

Abstract

Self-adjoint extensions of the usual Hamiltonian are studied for a charged particle moving in the x-y plane in the presence of an infinitely thin thread of magnetic flux along the z axis. This is done by starting with a square-well potential and taking its zero-range limit. The wave function for such an extended Hamiltonian is, although square integrable, singular at the origin. There are interesting differences between the cases with and without the magnetic flux.

Boundary Conditions from Path Integrals

T. Jaroszewicz

A particle moving in two dimensions in a repulsive ${r}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ potential, and in the presence of a magnetic flux line, is examined as an example of a system for which the Schr\"odinger Hamiltonian is not essentially self-adjoint. The path-integral propagator is, nevertheless, shown to exist, and to define a unique self-adjoint extension of the Hamiltonian, corresponding to specific boundary conditions at the origin. Physical implications are discussed.

Self-Adjoint Extension Approach for Singular Hamiltonians in (2 + 1) Dimensions

Vinícius Salem, Ramon F. Costa, Edilberto Oliveira Silva +1 more

In this work, we review two methods used to approach singular Hamiltonians in (2+1) dimensions. Both methods are based on the self-adjoint extension approach. It is very common to find singular Hamiltonians in quantum mechanics, especially in quantum systems in the presence of topological defects, which are usually modelled by point interactions. In general, it is possible to apply some kind of regularization procedure, as the vanishing of the wave function at the location of the singularity, ensuring that the wave function is square integrable and then can be associated with a physical state. However, an analysis based on the self-adjoint extension approach can lead to more general boundary conditions that still gives acceptable physical states. We exemplify the methods by exploring the bound and scattering scenarios of a spin 1/2 charged particle with an anomalous magnetic moment in the Aharonov-Bohm potential in the conical space.

A pragmatic approach to the problem of the self-adjoint extension of Hamilton operators with the Aharonov-Bohm potential

Jürgen Audretsch, Ulf Jasper, Vladimir D. Skarzhinsky

We consider the problem of the self-adjoint extension of Hamilton operators for charged quantum particles in the pure Aharonov-Bohm potential (infinitely thin solenoid). We present a pragmatic approach to the problem based on the orthogonalization of the radial solutions for different quantum numbers. Then we discuss a model of a scalar particle with a magnetic moment which allows us to explain why the self-adjoint extension contains arbitrary parameters and give a physical interpretation.

Magnetic perturbations of anyonic and Aharonov–Bohm Schrödinger operators

Michele Correggi, Davide Fermi

We study the Hamiltonian describing two anyons moving in a plane in the presence of an external magnetic field and identify a one-parameter family of self-adjoint realizations of the corresponding Schrödinger operator. We also discuss the associated model describing a quantum particle immersed in a magnetic field with a local Aharonov–Bohm singularity. For a special class of magnetic potentials, we provide a complete classification of all possible self-adjoint extensions.

Pauli approximations to the self-adjoint extensions of the Aharonov–Bohm Hamiltonian

James L. Borg, Joseph V. Pulé

It is well known that the formal Aharonov–Bohm Hamiltonian operator, describing the interaction of a charged particle with a magnetic vortex, has a four-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions, which reduces to a two-parameter family if one requires that the Hamiltonian commutes with the angular momentum operator. The question we study here is which of these self-adjoint extensions can considered as limits of regularized Aharonov–Bohm Hamiltonians, that is Pauli Hamiltonians in which the magnetic field corresponds to a flux tube of nonzero diameter. We show that not all the self-adjoint extensions in this two-parameter family can be obtained by these approximations, but only two one-parameter subfamilies. In these two cases we can choose the gyromagnetic ratio in the approximating Pauli Hamiltonian in such a way that we get convergence in the norm resolvent sense to the corresponding self-adjoint extension.

Whirling Waves and the Aharonov-Bohm Effect for Relativistic Spinning Particles

H. O. Girotti, F. Fonseca Romero

The formulation of Berry for the Aharonov-Bohm effect is generalized to the relativistic regime. Then, the problem of finding the self-adjoint extensions of the (2+1)-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian, in an Aharonov-Bohm background potential, is solved in a novel way. The same treatment also solves the problem of finding the self-adjoint extensions of the Dirac Hamiltonian in a background Aharonov-Casher. As will be shown, the set of eigenfunctions found through this generalization serves as a basis for writing any function in the domain of self-adjointness of the corresponding Dirac Hamiltonian.
