Unified theory of spontaneous and stimulated rotational Raman scattering

Mark R. Hermann, David H. Chambers, Sham N. Dixit +1 more

A general analytic theory of spontaneous and stimulated rotational Raman scattering is presented. This analytic description incorporates arbitrary polarization, time dependence, phase matching, and parametric coupling of the pump, Stokes, and anti-Stokes fields and the degeneracy of the rotational states. The analytic expressions for the time-dependent Stokes and anti-Stokes fields provide valuable physical insight into the dynamics of spontaneous and stimulated rotational Raman scattering.

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering in caesium vapour

Alan Corney, K Gardner

Experiments are reported in which a pulsed dye-laser beam nu L was focused into a heat-pipe oven containing caesium vapour at densities of about 10 17 cm -3 . Optically pumped fixed-frequency infra-red laser emission nu IR and tunable stimulated electronic Raman-scattered radiation nu S were observed. In addition the generation of ultra-violet radiation by coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering nu UV = nu L - nu S + nu IR was detected. Focused-beam phase matching appears to play a significant role in this process.

Self-Induced Phase Matching in Parametric Anti-Stokes Stimulated Raman Scattering

K. Hakuta, Masaru Suzuki, M. Katsuragawa +1 more

We show through the experiments of parametric anti-Stokes stimulated Raman scattering for solid hydrogen that the phase matching in a parametric process can be self-induced without the stringent restriction of the medium. We explain this self-induced phase matching as a consequence of strong coupling between radiation fields and medium spontaneously established through the stimulated Raman scattering process.
