Abstract

The Feynman propagator in coherent states representation is obtained for a system of a single harmonic oscillator coupled to a reservoir of N oscillators. Using this propagator, an exact master equation is obtained for the evolution of the reduced density matrix for the open system of the oscillator.

THE FUNCTIONAL DERIVATION OF MASTER EQUATIONS

HANS-THOMAS ELZE

Master equations describe the quantum dynamics of open systems interacting with an environment. They play an increasingly important role in understanding the emergence of semiclassical behavior and the generation of entropy, both being related to quantum decoherence. Presently we derive the exact master equation for a homogeneous scalar Higgs or inflaton like field coupled to an environment field. It is represented here by an infinite set of harmonic oscillators with a given spectral density. Our nonperturbative result follows directly from the path integral representation of the density matrix propagator. Applications and generalizations are discussed.

Coupled harmonic oscillator in a multimode harmonic oscillator bath: Derivation of quantum propagator and master equation using white noise analysis

Bienvenido Masirin Butanas Jr., Roland Cristopher F. Caballar

This paper presents an application of white noise functional approach to derive the quantum propagator and the evolution of the reduced density matrix for an open quantum system consisting of coupled harmonic oscillators which are coupled to a bath consisting of a multimode harmonic oscillator. It is shown that the full quantum propagator is a product of three individual propagators. These propagators were obtained after two successive transformations of the coordinates for the system, and the coordinates for the coupling between the bath and one of the two harmonic oscillators in the system. The obtained propagator is then used to derive the time evolution equation for the density matrix describing the system. The method used to derive the propagator of the open quantum system considered in this paper shows promise for analyzing open quantum systems, due to its ease of use and mathematical rigor.

Exact master equation and quantum decoherence of two coupled harmonic oscillators in a general environment

Chung-Hsien Chou, Ting Yu, B. L. Hu

In this paper we derive an exact master equation for two coupled quantum harmonic oscillators interacting via bilinear coupling with a common environment at arbitrary temperature made up of many harmonic oscillators with a general spectral density function. We first show a simple derivation based on the observation that the two harmonic oscillator model can be effectively mapped into that of a single harmonic oscillator in a general environment plus a free harmonic oscillator. Since the exact one harmonic oscillator master equation is available [B. L. Hu, J. P. Paz, and Y. Zhang, Phys. Rev. D 45, 2843 (1992)], the exact master equation with all its coefficients for this two harmonic oscillator model can be easily deduced from the known results of the single harmonic oscillator case. In the second part we give an influence functional treatment of this model and provide explicit expressions for the evolutionary operator of the reduced density matrix which are useful for the study of decoherence and disentanglement issues. We show three applications of this master equation: on the decoherence and disentanglement of two harmonic oscillators due to their interaction with a common environment under Markovian approximation, and a derivation of the uncertainty principle at finite temperature for a composite object, modeled by two interacting harmonic oscillators. The exact master equation for two, and its generalization to N, harmonic oscillators interacting with a general environment are expected to be useful for the analysis of quantum coherence, entanglement, fluctuations, and dissipation of mesoscopic objects toward the construction of a theoretical framework for macroscopic quantum phenomena.

Exact Solutions of the Caldeira-Leggett Master Equation: A Factorization Theorem For Decoherence

Shasanka Mohan Roy, Anu Venugopalan

Exact solutions of the Caldeira-Leggett Master equation for the reduced density matrix for a free particle and for a harmonic oscillator system coupled to a heat bath of oscillators are obtained for arbitrary initial conditions. The solutions prove that the Fourier transform of the density matrix at time t with respect to (x + x')/2, where x and x' are the initial and final coordinates, factorizes exactly into a part depending linearly on the initial density matrix and a part independent of it. The theorem yields the exact initial state dependence of the density operator at time t and its eventual diagonalization in the energy basis.

Damped harmonic oscillator within the Lindblad theory

Аурелиан Исар

The time evolution of the density matrix of the damped harmonic oscillator is studied within the Lindblad theory for open quantum systems. The density matrix is represented via a generating function, which is obtained by solving a time-dependent linear partial differential equation, derived from the master equation of to damped harmonic oscillator. Illustrative examples for specific initial conditions of the density matrix are provided. The Lindblad master equation is also transformed into Fokker-Planck equations for quasiprobability distributions. A comparative study is made for the Glauber P representation, the antinormal-ordering Q representation and Wigner W representation. (Author).
