Magnetic susceptibility of noninteracting fermions in a confined geometry

Arthur Minnullin, Tayurskii Dmitrii Albertovich

A model system of an ideal gas of neutral fermions in a confined geometry of different symmetry and size is theoretically examined. The behavior of these systems is found to exhibit qualitatively new features such as the oscillations in magnetic susceptibility with changing geometry size and particle density, indicating that the geometric confinement substantially affects the thermodynamic properties of the system.

Statistic properties of Fermi gas in a strong magnetic field

Men Fu-Dian, Fan Zhao-Lan

Based on the thermodynamic potential function of Fermi gas in a strong magnetic field, using the thermodynamics method, the integrated analytical expressions of thermodynamic quantities of the system at low temperatures are derived, and the effects of the magnetic field on the statistic properties of the system are analysed. It is shown that, as long as the temperature is not zero, the effects of the magnetic field on the thermodynamic quantities of the system contain both oscillatory and non-oscillatory parts. For the non-oscillatory part, compared with the situation of Fermi gas in a weak magnetic field, the influence of the magnetic field on the thermodynamic quantities is not exactly the same. For the oscillatory part, the period and amplitude of the oscillation are all related to the magnetic field. Due to the oscillation, the chemical potential may be greater than Ferim energy of the system, but the oscillation does not affect the thermodynamic stability of the system.

Thermodynamic and electronic properties of alkali-metal atom fluids

John P. Hernandez

By use of a free-energy model, the properties of a fluid composed of neutral atoms and diatomic molecules, positive ions and molecular ions, and an electron Fermi gas are calculated. The interactions include excluded volume, internal molecular binding, electron-neutral s-wave scattering, and screened Hartree interactions. For rubidium and cesium parametrizations, the vapor-liquid phase transitions with their critical points, the insulator-metal transitions, and the isothermal electrical conductivities and magnetic susceptibilities are obtained.
