Weak interaction limit for nuclear matter and the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation

Abstract

We consider an effective model of nuclear matter including spin and isospin degrees of freedom, described by an N -body Hamiltonian with suitably renormalized two-body and three-body interaction potentials. We show that the corresponding mean-field theory (the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation) is “exact” as N tends to infinity.

The TDHF Approximation for Hamiltonians with mmm-particle Interaction Potentials

According to a theory of H. Spohn, the time-dependent Hartree (TDH) equation governs the 1-particle state in N -particle systems whose dynamics are prescribed by a non-relativistic Schrödinger equation with 2-particle interactions, in the limit N tends to infinity while the strength of the 2-particle interaction potential is scaled by 1/N .In previous work we have considered the same mean field scaling for systems of fermions, and established that the error of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) approximation tends to 0 as N tends to infinity. In this article we extend our results to systems of fermions with m-particle interactions (m > 2).

Mean-field approximation for inclusive observables

The excitation of a many-body system by a one-body perturbation is considered. The stationary phase approximation to a functional-integral representation of the many-body evolution operator shows that the optimal mean field for describing the final expectation values of one- and two-body operators is that given by the time-dependent Hartree-Fock method. Semiclassical approximation to time-dependent Hartree--Fock theory

Maria Dworzecka, R. S. Poggioli

Working within a time-dependent Hartree-Fock framework, one develops a semiclassical approximation appropriate for large systems. It is demonstrated that the standard semiclassical approach, the Thomas-Fermi approximation, is inconsistent with Hartree-Fock theory when the basic two-body interaction is short-ranged (as in nuclear systems, for example). However, by introducing a simple extension of the Thomas-Fermi approximation, one overcomes this problem. One also discusses the infinite nuclear matter problem and point out that time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory yields collective modes of the zero sound variety instead of ordinary hydrodynamic (first) sound. One thus emphasizes that one should be extremely circumspect when attempting to cast the equations of motion of time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory into a hydrodynamic-like form.

Time-dependent mean-field approximation for nuclear dynamical problems

Shimon Levit

A general method for a microscopic description of nuclear dynamical problems is discussed. The method is based on a functional integral representation for the many-body time evolution operator $U({t}_{f},{t}_{i})$. In the stationary phase limit, a time-dependent mean-field approximation for the matrix elements of $U$ is obtained. Using standard procedures this allows for extraction of quantum mechanical information about bound states, tunneling, or scattering phenomena in a many-nucleon system. The approximation represents a natural generalization of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock method.NUCLEAR STRUCTURE, NUCLEAR REACTIONS derived mean-field approximation for matrix elements of $\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{-}iHt)$ from exact functional integral; discussed relation to static HF, TDHF, and scattering calculations.

A general hierarchy of approximations to the many-body Schr\"odinger equation is presented which reduces to the time-dependent mean-field approximation in lowest order and provides systematic corrections in subsequent orders. The theory is applied to two interacting systems described by the Lipkin model Hamiltonian.
