Generalized coherent states for systems with degenerate energy spectra

Abstract

A construction of Gaussian Klauder coherent states for systems with degenerate energy spectra is presented. Of special interest are the cases of truly accidental degeneracy that do not arise from a hidden or explicit symmetry. This is the case for a particle in a two-dimensional square box. In this case, the degeneracy results from the number of different ways an integer can be expressed as the sum of two squares. It is shown how to manage this situation and produce generalized coherent states that can mimic classical particle behavior for many collisions with the box walls.

Degenerate discrete energy spectra and associated coherent states

L. Dello Sbarba, Véronique Hussin

Generalized and Gaussian coherent states constructed for quantum system with degeneracies in the energy spectrum are compared with respect to some minimal definitions and fundamental properties they have to satisfy. The generalized coherent states must be eigenstates of a certain annihilation operator that has to be properly defined in the presence of degeneracies. The Gaussian coherent states are, in the particular harmonic oscillator case, an approximation of the generalized coherent states and so the localizability in phase space of the particle in those states is very good. For other quantum systems, this last property serves as a definition of those Gaussian coherent states. The example of a particle in a two-dimensional square box is thus revisited having in mind the preceding definitions of generalized and Gaussian coherent states and also the preservation of the important property known as the resolution of the identity operator.

Generalized coherent states and quantum-classical correspondence

Ronald F. Fox, Mee Hyang Choi

Gaussian Klauder coherent states are constructed for the harmonic oscillator, the planar rotor, and the particle in a box. The standard harmonic oscillator coherent states are given by expansions in the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian in terms of a complex parameter \ensuremath{\alpha}. When the complex modulus of \ensuremath{\alpha} is large, these states are identical in behavior with a particular choice of Gaussian Klauder coherent state. When the angular momentum of a planar rotor is large compared with Planck's constant, the angle distribution associated with a Gaussian Klauder coherent state for this case remains sharply localized for many rotations. Similarly, for the particle in a box, it is possible to choose parameters in the Gaussian Klauder coherent state so that a localized particle bounces back and forth at constant velocity between the walls of the box for many periods without significant delocalization. Buried in this behavior is the Fourier series for a triangle wave. These examples show how Gaussian Klauder coherent states are of utility in understanding quantum-classical correspondence.

Degeneracy in the particle-in-a-box problem

G B Shaw

The notions of systematic and accidental degeneracy are discussed for a quantum-mechanical particle in a two-dimensional box. Separability of coordinates is shown to admit extra systematic degeneracy over that expected from the point-group symmetry. The 'accidental' degeneracy for square and triangular boxes is discussed in detail and related to geometric symmetries-described by rings of operators, however, and not by a symmetry group.

Some physical appearances of vector coherent states and coherent states related to degenerate Hamiltonians

S. Twareque Ali, Fabio Bagarello

In the spirit of some earlier work on the construction of vector coherent states (VCS) over matrix domains, we compute here such states associated to some physical Hamiltonians. In particular, we construct vector coherent states of the Gazeau–Klauder type. As a related problem, we also suggest a way to handle degeneracies in the Hamiltonian for building coherent states. Specific physical Hamiltonians studied include a single photon mode interacting with a pair of fermions, a Hamiltonian involving a single boson and a single fermion, a charged particle in a three-dimensional harmonic force field and the case of a two-dimensional electron placed in a constant magnetic field, orthogonal to the plane which contains the electron. In this last example, which is related to the fractional quantum Hall effect, an interesting modular structure emerges for two underlying von Neumann algebras, related to opposite directions of the magnetic field. This leads to the existence of coherent states built out of Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) states for the system.

Equivalent sets of coherent states of the 1D infinite square well and properties

Marc-Antoine Fiset, Véronique Hussin

We prove the equivalence (under some conditions) of two sets of coherent states built for the one-dimensional infinite square well: the so-called generalized and Gaussian Klauder coherent states. We then derive an approximate close expression approaching their probability density and wave function to explore their properties analytically. This process gives thereby explanation of the quasi-classical behavior of these states in terms of the main observables and the Heisenberg uncertainty product

Construction of coherent states for physical algebraic systems

Y. Hassouni, Evaldo M. F. Curado, M. A. Rego-Monteiro

We construct a general state which is an eigenvector of the annihilation operator of the generalized Heisenberg algebra. We show, for several systems characterized by different energy spectra, that this general state satisfies the minimal set of conditions required to obtain Klauder's minimal coherent states.
