Atomic Interferometer Based on Adiabatic Population Transfer

Martin Weitz, Brenton C. Young, Steven Chu

We demonstrate an atomic interferometer based on the transfer of population between two ground states via adiabatic following using a nonabsorbing "dark" superposition state. This type of interferometer promises to be useful for precise measurement of the photon recoil energy and also for large area atomic interferometers since it allows transfer of a large number of photon recoil momenta to the atoms with high efficiency. In preliminary experiments, we have obtained a coherent transfer efficiency of 95% with transfer of photon momenta and 98.4% with no transfer of momenta. Over 140 photon momenta have been transferred coherently to the atoms.

Coherent Population Transfer in an Atom by Multiphoton Adiabatic Rapid Passage

H. Maeda, J. H. Gurian, D.V.L. Norum +1 more

Coherent population transfer in an atom using a sequence of adiabatic rapid passages through single-photon resonances is well-known, but it requires that the frequency sweep match the changing frequencies of the atomic transitions. The same population transfer can be effected via a single multiphoton adiabatic rapid passage, which requires only a small frequency sweep, if it is possible to select the desired multiphoton transition from the many possible transitions. Here we report the observation of population transfer between Rydberg states by high order multiphoton adiabatic rapid passage.

Synthesis of arbitrary quantum states via adiabatic transfer of Zeeman coherence

A. S. Parkins, P. Marte, P. Zoller +1 more

A scheme for the preparation of general coherent superpositions of photon-number states is proposed. By strongly coupling an atom to a cavity field, atomic ground-state Zeeman coherence can be transferred by (coherent) adiabatic passage to the cavity mode and a general field state can be generated without atomic projection noise.
