Abstract

Planar coherent states with domains in the complex plane are defined by means of ladder operators acting in a separable Hilbert space. Some properties of the states are derived and examples provided to indicate areas of possible applications.

On a Schrödinger Equation in the Complex Space Variable

Manuel Leote Tavares Ingles Esquivel, Nadezhda P. Krasii, Philippe L. Didier

We study a separable Hilbert space of smooth curves taking values in the Segal–Bergmann space of analytic functions in the complex plane, and two of its subspaces that are the domains of unbounded non self-adjoint linear partial differential operators of the first and second order. We show how to build a Hilbert basis for this space. We study these first- and second-order partial derivation non-self-adjoint operators defined on this space, showing that these operators are defined on dense subspaces of the initial space of smooth curves; we determine their respective adjoints, compute their respective commutators, determine their eigenvalues and, under some normalisation conditions on the eigenvectors, we present examples of a discrete set of eigenvalues. Using these derivation operators, we study a Schrödinger-type equation, building particular solutions given by their representation as smooth curves on the Segal–Bergmann space, and we show the existence of general solutions using an Fourier–Hilbert base of the space of smooth curves. We point out the existence of self-adjoint operators in the space of smooth curves that are obtained by the composition of the partial derivation operators with multiplication operators, showing that these operators admit simple sequences of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. We present two applications of the Schrödinger-type equation studied. In the first one, we consider a wave associated with an object having the mass of an electron, showing that two waves, when considered as having only a free real space variable, are entangled, in the sense that the probability densities in the real variable are almost perfectly correlated. In the second application, after postulating that a usual package of information may have a mass of the order of magnitude of the neutron’s mass attributed to it—and so well into the domain of possible quantisation—we explore some consequences of the model.

Coherent states in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space

Adam Miranowicz, K. Pia̧tek, R. Tanaś

We construct, according to Glauber's definition, the coherent states in a univocally specified finite-dimensional Hilbert space. Their analytical form is obtained as an analytical solution of the problem raised by Bu\ifmmode \check{z}\else \v{z}\fi{}ek et al. [Phys. Rev. A 45, 8079 (1992)]. The phase properties of the coherent states are studied within the Pegg-Barnett formalism.

Properties of a Polarization based Phase Operator

Prajapati, Chandra, D. Ranganathan

We define a Hermitian phase operator for zero mass spin one particles (photons) by taking account polarization. The Hilbert space includes the positive helicity states and negative helicity states with opposite circular polarization. We define an operator which corresponds to the physical process of reversing the sense of polarization and acts as a bridge between positive helicity states and negative helicity states. The exponential phase operator obtained using the entire set is unitary and acts as ladder operator over all the states. The phase operator derived from this exponential operator satisfies the canonical commutation relations with the number operator. We have calculated the density matrix and the phase probability distribution of various states like coherent states, squeezed states and thermal states, to illustrate the utility of our operator.

The close connection between the definition and construction of raised and decreased coherent states with the inverse generators in the algebraic description of quantum confined systems

A N F Aleixo, A. B. Balantekin

Using an expanded algebraic formalism with the inclusion of inverse operators, we construct raised and decreased coherent states for a set of exactly solvable quantum confined systems. We assume in this procedure both the ladder-operator and the displacement-operator methods, showing the equivalence between the two approaches. For each coherent state defined, we present its expansion in the Hilbert eigenstate space Hes, eigenvalue equation, overcompleteness relation, as well as other intrinsic properties. Whenever possible, we present an interpretation based on nonlinear deformation models for these new forms of coherent states. We evaluate the relevance of the new coherent states in quantum entanglement and squeezing by taking, as an example, the case of a coupled system.
