Abstract

Abstract We study the restricted Monte Carlo integration error for anisotropic Sobolev classes. Results prove that with O(log2 n)random bits we have the optimal order for the n-th minimal Monte Carlo integration error with arbitrary random numbers. Supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant Nos. 10261007 and 10501026), Tianyuan Fund for Mathematics (Grant No. 10426020) and the fund for Nankai University

A Monte Carlo method for integration of multivariate smooth functions I: Sobolev spaces

Mario Ullrich

We study a Monte Carlo algorithm that is based on a specific (randomly shifted and dilated) lattice point set. The main result of this paper is that the mean squared error for a given compactly supported, square-integrable function is bounded by $n^{-1/2}$ times the $L_2$-norm of the Fourier transform outside a region around the origin, where $n$ is the expected number of function evaluations. As corollaries we obtain the order of convergence for the Sobolev spaces $H^s_p$ with isotropic, anisotropic or mixed smoothness for all values of the parameters. This proves, in particular, that the optimal order of convergence in the latter case is $n^{-s-1/2}$ for $p\ge2$, which is, in contrast to the case of deterministic algorithms, independent of the dimension. This shows that Monte Carlo algorithms can improve the order by more than $n^{-1/2}$ for a whole class of practically important function classes. All results carry over to functions defined on the unit cube without boundary conditions.

Complexity of Sobolev imbeddings and integration in the deterministic and randomized settings

Peixin Ye

This paper reformulates the problems of approximation of imbedding and integration from anisotropic Sobolev classes B(Wrp([0, 1]d)) in the deterministic, randomized and average case settings, and obtains the exact orders of the n-th minimal error of these problems in all three settings. The results show that in the case of B(Wrp([0, 1]d)) being not imbedded into the space of continuous functions C([0, 1]d), the randomized and average case error are essential smaller than the deterministic ones. Quantitatively, this maximal gain for imbedding problem amounts to the factor n-1+ε for any ε > 0, and for integration problem the gain is up to factor n-1 which is also the maximal speedup over the deterministic algorithms observed so far in natural numerical problems.

Lower Bound for Quantum Integration Error on Some Sobolev Classes

Peixin Ye

We study the approximation of the integration of multivariate functions in the quantum model of computation. Using a new reduction approach we obtain a lower bound of the n-th minimal query error on anisotropic Sobolev classes B(Wpr([0, 1]d)), (r isin R+d). Then combining our previous results we determine the optimal bound of nth minimal query error for anisotropic Holder-Nikolskii class B(Hinfinr([0, 1]d)), (r isin R+d) and Sobolev class B(Wpr([0, 1]d)) (r isin Nd). The results show the quantum algorithms give speed up over classical algorithms.

We study a Monte Carlo algorithm that is based on a specific (randomly shifted and dilated) lattice point set. The main result of this paper is that the mean squared error for a given compactly supported, square-integrable function is bounded by n−1/2n^{-1/2}n−1/2 times the L2L_2L2-norm of the Fourier transform outside a region around the origin, where nnn is the expected number of function evaluations. As corollaries we obtain the order of convergence for the Sobolev spaces HpsH^s_pHps with isotropic, anisotropic or mixed smoothness for all values of the parameters. This proves, in particular, that the optimal order of convergence in the latter case is n−s−1/2n^{-s-1/2}n−s−1/2 for p≥2p\ge2p≥2, which is, in contrast to the case of deterministic algorithms, independent of the dimension. This shows that Monte Carlo algorithms can improve the order by more than n−1/2n^{-1/2}n−1/2 for a whole class of practically important function classes. All results carry over to functions defined on the unit cube without boundary conditions.
