m j -Resolved Doppler Spectroscopy of Cs(6p2P3/2,m j) Atoms Predissociated from a Single Level Cs2D1Σu+ (v = 46, J = 54)

Abstract In a plane perpendicular to a magnetic field a collimated cesium beam was crossed at right angles by a pump laser beam. Cs2 molecules were excited to the D1Σu+ (v = 46, J = 54) level, which predissociated selectively to Cs(6s2S1/2) + Cs(6p2P3/2) atoms. The mj-resolved excitation spectra of the Cs(8s2S1/2,m′j ← 6p2P3/2,mj) transitions at a magnetic field of 1.91 kG were measured using a probe laser beam propagated either along the magnetic field or along the pump beam. The population of Cs(6p2P3/2,mj) atoms was found to be in the ratio 77 : 136 : 100 : 46 for mj = 3/2, 1/2, −1/2, and −3/2 based on an analysis of the line intensities. From the line shapes of the excitation spectra, Cs(6p2P3/2,±1/2) atoms were found to recoil predominantly parallel to the magnetic field H, and Cs(6p2P3/2,±3/2) atoms were found to recoil predominantly perpendicular to H.

Cavity-enhanced spectra of hot Rydberg atoms

Qin-Xia Wang, Zhi‐Hui Wang, Yanxin Liu +5 more

High-precision spectra of Rydberg atoms are of significance in studying the interaction between Rydberg atoms, the energy level structure of Rydberg atom, and the precision measurement of the electromagnetic field. To enhance the measurement sensitivity, it is necessary to achieve the high contrast, high signal-to-noise ratio, and narrow linewidth of the spectra of the Rydberg atoms. In this work, the cavity-enhanced spectra of Rydberg atoms are studied theoretically and experimentally. Comparing with the free-space spectra of Rydberg atoms, the contrast and the signal-to-noise ratio are enhanced by 11.5 times, with the linewidth unchanged. Under the condition of two-photon resonance, both the electro-magnetically induced transparency and the double-resonance optical-pumping process can suppress the absorption of the probe laser, thereby improving the impedance matching of the cavity. As the intracavity probe laser intensity turns stronger, the contrast and signal-to-noise ratio can be improved further, and the improvement depends on the transmission of the probe laser through the atom vapor. It is expected that the contrast and signal-to-noise ratio can be improved by a factor of 23 through optimizing the temperature of the cesium atom vapor. This work provides an important reference for improving the contrast of the spectra of Rydberg atoms and the sensitivity of Rydberg-based precision measurements.

Electron-spin double resonance of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond under a strong driving field

Takumi Mikawa, Ryusei Okaniwa, Yuichiro Matsuzaki +2 more

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond has been the focus of research efforts because of its suitability for use in applications such as quantum sensing and quantum simulations. Recently, the electron-spin double resonance (ESDR) of NV centers has been exploited for detecting radio-frequency (RF) fields with continuous-wave optically detected magnetic resonance. However, the characteristic phenomenon of ESDR under a strong RF field remains to be fully elucidated. In this study, we theoretically and experimentally analyzed the ESDR spectra under strong RF fields by adopting Floquet theory. Our analytical and numerical calculations could reproduce the ESDR spectra obtained by measuring the spin-dependent photoluminescence under the continuous application of a microwave and a RF field for a DC bias magnetic field perpendicular to the NV axis. We found that anticrossing structures that appear under a strong RF field are induced by the generation of RF-dressed states owing to the two-RF-photon resonances. Moreover, we found that $2n$-RF-photon resonances were allowed by an unintentional DC bias magnetic field parallel to the NV axis. These results should help in the realization of precise MHz-range AC magnetometry with a wide dynamic range beyond the rotating wave approximation regime as well as Floquet engineering in open quantum systems.
