Optical pumping in a flowing helium afterglow with additive metal impurity atoms

Abstract

It is demonstrated that in a Penning collision of optically oriented metastable helium atoms with an impurity metal atom such as barium, both the longitudinal and transverse components of spin angular momentum are conserved. This results in a polarization of the ion which may be detected by optical emission in the case of excited ion levels or absorption for the ground states. A series of experiments is described which demonstrates the spin dependence of the Penning-collision process. The magnetic resonance of excited-state ions may be observed directly; from the resonance-linewidth radiative lifetimes may be measured.

Ion Polarization Via Penning Collisions with Optically Pumped Metastable Helium

L. D. Schearer

Transfer of spin polarization from optically pumped metastable helium atoms to the ions of Cd, Sr, and Zn following Penning collisions has been demonstrated indicating that a component of spin angular momentum is conserved. The ion polarization, detected optically, exceeds 10% at ion concentrations on the order of ${10}^{10}$-${10}^{11}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$.

Spin Exchange between Optically Oriented Metastable Helium Atoms and Thermal Electrons in a Flowing Afterglow

L. D. Schearer

The effects of spin-exchange collisions between thermal electrons and optically oriented metastable helium (${2}^{3}{S}_{1}$) atoms have been observed in a flowing helium afterglow, and the exchange cross section has been measured. The source of electrons derives from Penning collisions between the 19.8-eV metastable atoms and impurity atoms which are titrated into the flow region. The presence of thermal electrons shortens the metastable-spin-state lifetime and reduces the magnitude of the optical-pumping resonance signal. The electron density is determined from the reduction of the metastable density. The exchange cross section is found to be 1.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}14}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$.

Spin polarization of 85Rb atoms in collisions with optically oriented metastable 4He atoms in alkali–helium plasma

Sergei P. Dmitriev, N. A. Dovator, Victor A. Kartoshkin

We have experimentally detected a signal of magnetic resonance (MR) from 85Rb atoms in the 52 S 1/2 state by measuring the absorption of light from a helium lamp producing optical orientation of metastable 23 S 1 4He atoms in a cell containing alkali metal vapor and gaseous helium at a pressure of 1 Torr. The ratio of MR signal amplitudes in Rb and He atoms did not exceed 10–2. Peculiarities of the formation and observation of the collisional polarization of Rb atoms in alkali–helium plasma are discussed.

Rotationally induced Penning ionization of ultracold photoassociated helium dimers

Jérémie Léonard, Allard P. Mosk, M. Walhout +4 more

We have studied photoassociation of metastable 2 3 S 1 helium atoms near the 2 3 S 1 -2 3 P 2 asymptote by both ion detection in a magneto-optical trap and trap-loss measurements in a magnetic trap. A detailed comparison between the results of the two experiments gives insight into the mechanism of the Penning ionization process. We have identified four series of resonances corresponding to vibrational molecular levels belonging to different rotational states in two potentials. The corresponding spin states become quasi-purely quintet at small interatomic distance, and Penning ionization is inhibited by spin conservation rules. Only a weak rotational coupling is responsible for the contamination by singlet spin states leading to a detectable ion signal. However, for one of these series, Bose statistics does not enable the rotational coupling and the series detected through trap-loss does not give rise to sufficient ionization for detection.

Coherence Transfer in a Penning Ionizing Collision

L. D. Schearer, L. A. Riseberg

Modulation of the intensity of light emitted by ${\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}(^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}})$ ions at the resonance frequency of metastable helium atoms has been observed, demonstrating that coherence has been transferred in the Penning collision. The coherent excitation of the Penning ions suggests that the techniques of "coherence spectroscopy" such as level-crossing and Hanle experiments can be extended to excited states of Penning ions which are currently inaccessible by means of optical excitation.

Observation of oriented 23 S 1 helium atoms in a sodium-helium plasma irradiated by polarization-modulated laser radiation

Sergei P. Dmitriev, N. A. Dovator, R. A. Zhitnikov +2 more

An experiment on the observation of spin polarization of metastable helium atoms interacting with optically oriented sodium atoms under continuous rf discharge conditions is described. Laser radiation with alternating-sign circular polarization, tuned to the resonance excitation of the 3 2 S 1/2 –3 2 P 1/2 transition in Na atoms, is used as the source for optical pumping of ground-state sodium atoms.
