Para-Fermi algebras and the many-electron correlation problem

Abstract

A new formulation of the many-electron correlation problem is presented based on the use of parastatistics. It is shown that second-order para-Fermi creation and annihilation operators, which correspond to the creation and annihilation of spin-averaged paraparticles, occur naturally for the spin-independent many-electron problem. Moreover, the spin-independent many-electron Hamiltonian is directly expressible in terms of the parafield operators. The structure of the general para-Fermi algebra is also investigated from the viewpoint of the pseudo-orthogonal group O(2n+1, 1). Finally, an explicit matrix representation for the para-Fermi algebra of order 2, which enables one to handle even particle-number-nonconserving operators, is obtained in a canonical U(n)-adapted basis.

First and Second Quantization Theories of Parastatistics

Thien Vo-Dai

Although usually only two kinds of statistics, namely Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics, are considered in Quantum Mechanics and in Quantum Field Theory, other kinds of statistics, called collectively parastatistics, are conceivable. We critically review theoretical studies of parastatistics to date, point out and clarify several confusions. We first study the "proofs" so far proposed for the symmetrization postulate which excludes parastatistics, emphasizing their ad hoc nature. Then, after exploring in detail the structure of the quantum mechanical theory of paraparticles, we clarify some confusions concerning the compatibility of parastatistics with the so-called cluster property, which has been an issue of controversy for several years. We show, following a suggestion of Greenberg, that the quantum mechanical theory of paraparticles can be formulated in terms of density matrix compatibly with the cluster property. We also discuss such topics as selection rules for systems with variable numbers of paraparticles, the connection between statistics and permutation characters, and the classification of paraparticles. For the quantum field theory of paraparticles, we study discrete representations of the para-commutation relations and illustrate in detail Greenberg and Messiah's theorem concerning Green's ansatzes. Also, fundamental topics such as the spin-statistic theorem, the TCP theorem and the observability of parafields are discussed on the basis of Green's ansatzes. Finally, we point out that the so-called particle permutation operators do not always define multi-dimensional representations of the permutation group both in first and second quantization theories. This questions the validity of the correspondence between the two theories which has recently been proposed.

The Group Theoretical Structure of Fermion Many-Body Systems Arising from the Canonical Anticommutation Relation. I: Lie Algebras of Fermion Operators and Exact Generator Coordinate Representations of State Vectors

Hideo Fukutome

We study in this series the group theoretical structure of Fermion many-body systems arising from the canonical anticommutation relation of the annihilation-creation operators. Owing to the canonical anticommutation relation, a Fermion system with N single particle states has at least six Lie algebras of Fermion operators, a U(N), an SO(2N), an SO(2N+1), an SO(2N+2) and two U(N+1) Lie algebras. There are also two Clifford algebras of 2N and 2N+1 dimensions. The Fermion space is shown to belong to the spinor representations of the SO(2N), SO(2N+1) and SO(2N+2) groups. The canonical transformations generated by the U(N), SO(2N) and SO(2N+1) Lie algebras are characterized as the transformations to induce the linear U(N), SO(2N) and SO(2N+1) transformations for the Clifford algebras. The independent (quasi-) particle type wave functions of three kinds including the Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Bogoliubov wave functions are constructed by means of the canonical transformations and their relationship is studied. We derive three exact generator coordinate representations for state vectors in which the generator coordinates are the U(N), SO(2N) or SO(2N+1) group and the generating functions are the independent (quasi-) particle type wave functions. We characterize the structures of state vectors in the generator coordinate representations and study the relationship of the three representations.

Spin-dependent unitary group approach. I. General formalism

M. D. Gould, Josef Paldus

A new spin-dependent unitary group approach to the many-electron correlation problem is investigated. It is demonstrated that the matrix elements of the U(2n) generators, in the U(n)×U(2) adapted electronic Gel’fand basis, are determined by the matrix elements of a single U(n) adjoint tensor operator, herein denoted by Δij(1≤i, j≤n), where Δ is a polynomial of degree two in the U(n) matrix E=[Eij]. The method is then applied, in the second paper of the series, to derive a simple segment level formula for the matrix elements of all U(2n) generators. The advantages of this new procedure for computer implementation are discussed and the central role played by the matrix Δ for the determination of molecular spin densities is highlighted.

Formulation of the Many-Body Problem for Composite Particles

Marvin D. Girardeau

The many-body problem for a system of composite particles is formulated in a way which takes explicit account of the composite nature of these particles and allows a clear separation between interatomic and intraatomic interactions. A second-quantization representation, fully equivalent to the conventional representation in which nuclei and electrons appear explicitly, is developed in terms of atomic annihilation and creation operators satisfying elementary Bose or Fermi commutation relations. All effects of the composite nature of the atoms are exactly contained in the interatomic and intraatomic matrix elements and in certain exchange integrals. An application is made to the problem of Bose condensation of fermion pairs.

Canonical partition functions for parastatistical systems of any order

S. Chaturvedi

A general formula for the canonical partition function for a parastatistical system of any order is derived. The formula expresses the canonical partition functions for these in terms of sums of Schur functions. The only hitherto known result due to Suranyi [Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 2329 (1990)] for parasystems of order two is obtained as a special case. Our results apply not only to parastatistics but to all statistics that can be defined on the basis of the permutation group, including those for which no simple definition in terms of the algebra of creation and annihilation operators is possible. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Supersymmetry, parastatistics, and operator realizations of a Lie algebra

S. N. Biswas, S. K. Soni

The algebraic structure of parastatistics has been generalized and it is found to be consistent with supersymmetric quantum mechanics with supercharges constructed out of the generalized para-Bose and para-Fermi operators. It is further shown that the operator algebra of generalized parastatistics offers a realization of the (graded) orthosymplectic group similar to that of orthogonal and symplectic groups using conventional parastatistics.
