Abstract

We theoretically study the control of a weak quantum light in a resonant three-level condensed medium derived by a pair of resonant counterpropagating laser fields. We analytically demonstrate that the adiabatic switching on of one of the control fields generates an entangled state of photon wave packets moving together at subnormal slow velocity in the medium with relative amplitudes determined by the control laser fields. An abrupt switching-off the control field makes the entangled wave packets propagate in the opposite direction with temporally reversed profiles relative to each other. We have analyzed the quantum control of the entanglement generation in terms of the adiabatic and nonadiabatic switching operations of the coupling laser pulse.

Quantum control of entangled photon-pair generation in electron-atom collisions driven by laser-synthesized free-electron wave packets

R. Esteban Goetz, Klaus Bartschat

We propose an extension of coherent control using laser-synthesized free-electron matter waves. In contrast to coherent control schemes exploiting optical coherences to steer the dynamics of matter waves, we analyze the opposite and investigate the control of quantum light emission driven by laser-sculpted coherent free-electron matter waves. We apply this concept to the control of entangled photon-pair emission in electron-atom collisions, in which the incident electron wave packet, colliding with a target atom $B$, is engineered by interferometric resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization of a parent atom $A$. Each ionization pathway leads to electron wave packets that coherently interfere during temporal evolution in the continuum. Their mutual coherence can be controlled by adjusting the relative phases or time delays of the frequency components of the ionizing field contributing to the interfering pathways. We report coherent control of entangled photon-pair generation in radiative photocascade emission upon decay of the target atom after inelastic excitation triggered by the collision with the synthesized electron wave packet.

Generation and Manipulation of Multi-Color Stationary Light Field Using Electromagnetically Induced Transperancy

Sergey A. Moiseev, Byoung Seung HAM

Dynamic control of a weak quantum probe light pulse for the generation and quantum manipulations of a stationary multi-color (MC-) light field in a resonant coherent atomic medium using electromagnetically induced transparency is proposed. The manipulations have been analyzed based on the analytical solution of the adiabatic limit in the evolution of MC-light fields resulting from interaction of the slow probe light with the new fields generated in the nondegenerate multi-wave mixing scheme. We have found a critical stopping condition for the MC-light fields where the group velocity of light should reduce down to zero. Semiclassical dynamics and behavior of specific quantum correlations of the MC-light fields have been studied in detail for particular initial quantum states of the probe pulse. The stationary MC-field dynamics are treated in terms of dark MC-polariton states constructed for the studied multi-wave mixing processes. We have found the conditions for optimal manipulation of the MC-light while preserving the delicate quantum correlations of the initial probe light pulse. The quantum manipulations leading to the frequency and direction switching of the initial probe light pulse as well as to the quantum swapping of probe light into the new multi-frequency light fields have been proposed. The possibilities of the interaction time lengthening and enhancement of the electric field amplitudes of the stationary MC-light are also discussed for enhancement of the interactions with weak quantum fields in the spatially limited media.

Quantum control of entangled photon-pair generation in electron-atom collisions driven by multiphoton-tailored free-electron wave packets

R. Esteban Goetz, Klaus Bartschat

Two-pathway coherent control of photoionization is an example of control of matter waves using light. Here, we analyze the opposite and investigate the control of quantum light using matter waves. We report coherent control of entangled photon-pair emission in electron-atom collisions mediated by transfer of the temporal and atomic coherence carried by the incident electron wave packet. The latter is engineered by resonantly-enhanced multiphoton ionization exploiting interfering ionization pathways. We show that both sources of coherence can be used to control the angular distributions of photons emitted by radiative cascade upon optical decay in the target atom, offering the possibility of coherent control driven by sculpted matter waves via transfer of optical and atomic coherence.

Propagation of the phase pulses of bichromatic radiation under the electromagnetically induced transparency conditions

Valeriy I. Yudin, M. Yu. Basalaev, А. В. Тайченачев +2 more

We study the dynamics of the phase pulses of laser radiation with two resonant frequency components propagating in an atomic three-level Λ type medium under coherent population trapping. Using the density matrix adiabatic approach we show that the effect of a very large slowing down occurs not only for amplitude pulses, but also for phase pulses. The group velocity of phase pulses can be controlled by the amplitudes of resonant fields. The analytical solution describing the mutual influence of the phase modulation of one field component on another is obtained.

Temporal coherence and correlation of counterpropagating twin photons

A. Gatti, T. Corti, E. Brambilla

This work analyzes the temporal coherence and correlation of counterpropagating twin photons generated in a quasiphase matched nonlinear crystal by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We find out different pictures depending on the pump pulse duration relative to two characteristic temporal scales, determined, respectively, by the temporal separation between the counterpropagating and the co-propagating wave packets. When the pump duration is intermediate between the two scales, we show a transition from a highly entangled state to an almost separable state, with strongly asymmetric spectral properties of the photons.

Quantum control and manipulation of multi-color light fields

S. A. Moiseev, Byoung Seung HAM

Quantum control of stationary multi-color (MC) light fields in resonant medium with multi-Λ scheme of atomic transition is proposed. We have found the general analytical solution in the adiabatic limit of quantum evolution resulting from the interaction of the slow probe light with the new fields generated in the nondegenerate multi-wave mixing scheme. We have found a critical condition for the stopping and quantum manipulation of the MC-light fields where the united light group velocity can be reduced down to zero with optimal spectral parameters while preserving the delicate quantum correlations of the initial probe light pulse. The manipulations, which provide the effective transference of quantum probe light to the new multifrequency light fields have been analyzed.
