Abstract

Experimental results for the probability ratio R 3 during three-photon ionization of Ca, Sr and Ba atoms in circularly and linearly polarized fields are presented for the principal quantum number range n=4-13. Unlike the alkali atoms, in most cases the measured R 3 magnitudes are considerably less than the values estimated by the Klarsfield-Maquet factorial formula.

Three Photon Ionization of Alkali Atoms at the Ruby Laser Wavelength

M. R. Cervenan, R. H. C. Chan, Neil R. Isenor

Single mode ruby laser radiation (694 nm) and an atomic beam apparatus have been used in the study of the three photon ionization of Na, K, Rb, and Cs atoms. The process in all cases is nonresonant, the observations being consistent with a rate given by W3F3 where F is the photon flux. The values obtained for W3l (linear polarization) and W3C (circular polarization) and the ratio W3c/W3l are discussed in relation to recently calculated results and the few other experimental results available. Discrepancies well beyond the assigned errors exist between experimental and calculated results.

Resonance multiphoton ionization of alkaline Earth Ca, Ba, Sr atoms

M. A. Tursunov, B.B. Gaibnazarov, Kh. Bakieva +2 more

In this work, we study the process of three-photon resonant ionization of alkaline earth atoms Ca, Sr, and Ba. To carry out the experiments, a frequency-tunable laser setup was created. An effusive beam of alkali atoms served as an atomic target.

Resonant three-photon ionization of potassium with circularly and linearly polarized light

Pierre Agostini, P. Bensoussan

We report observations of the ionization of atomic potassium by simultaneous absorption of three dye laser quanta. The laser wavelength is tuned through the two-photon resonances with the 6S1/2 and 4D3/2,5/2 states, and the dependence of the ionization probability on the laser wavelength is investigated for linearly and circularly polarized light. Our results are in agreement with the selection rules and theoretical estimates of the ionization probability.

Effect of Light Polarization on Multiphoton Ionization of Atoms

P. Lambropoulos

We present a theoretical interpretation of an effect recently observed in two- and three-photon ionization of Cs. We show that the total cross sections for two- and three-photon ionization of a one-electron atom depend on the polarization of the incident light. Expressions are derived for the ratio of the cross section for circularly polarized light to that for linearly polarized, and their maximum values are obtained.

RESONANCES OF PHOTOIONIZATION OF Ca AND Sr ATOMS IN AN ELECTRIC FIELD

QIU JI-ZHEN, Sen Zhang, WANG GANG +1 more

Photoionization spectra of Ca and Sr atoms above the classical field-ionization threshold are observed by using two-photon excitation method. The relation between the resonances and the applied electric field as well as polarization, of laser beam are discussed.
