Abstract

The opening of a new channel of excitative Penning ionization by a collision-complex absorption of laser light has been observed in the system Ar*($^{3}P$) + Ca. Two relatively broad resonances at 5958 and 5990 \AA{} were found, corresponding to the production of ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{+}$($5p^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$) and ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{+}$($5p^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$), respectively. The data indicate that the laser-assisted Penning-ionization cross section to these states exceeds that of the field-free ionization to ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{+}$($4p^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$).

We have observed the opening of a new channel of excitive Penning ionization by the collision complex absorption of laser light in the system Ar*(3p) + Ca.Two relatively broad bands at 5958 and 5990 A were found, corresponding to the production of ca+(5p 2 P 3 ; 2 ) and ca+(_5p 2 P 11 ~), respectively.Preliminary-estim~tes indicate that the laser-ass~sted Penning ionization cross-section exceeds that of the field-free ionization to ca+(4p 2p3/2).

Coherence Transfer in a Penning Ionizing Collision

L. D. Schearer, L. A. Riseberg

Modulation of the intensity of light emitted by ${\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}(^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}})$ ions at the resonance frequency of metastable helium atoms has been observed, demonstrating that coherence has been transferred in the Penning collision. The coherent excitation of the Penning ions suggests that the techniques of "coherence spectroscopy" such as level-crossing and Hanle experiments can be extended to excited states of Penning ions which are currently inaccessible by means of optical excitation.

Collisions and half-collisions with lasers

N. K. Rahman, Carla Guidotti

Merging two subfields, collisions and spectroscopy, this book presents the latest research proposals, innovative experiments and fresh ideas. Topics considered include radiative collision induced electron continuum-continuum scattering; models of laser-induced chemical reactions; experimental studies of laser-induced ionizing collisions; laser photodissociation of Na/sub 2/ + ions produced by laser resonant ionization of Na vapor; steady-state electron-atom collision in a laser field; conditions for the observation of the predicted splitting of the laser assisted electron impact of the differential cross section of atoms; transitions between resonances; some proposals for experiments; above-threshold multiphoton ionization; observability of optical collisions in the frequency and the time domain; laser switched collisions - a diagrammatical approach; polarization of atomic fluorescence excited by molecular photodissociation; multiphoton selective excitation; on the role of chaotic dynamics with many basins of attraction; predissociation in a strong electromagnetic field; theory of double resonance; and coherent excitation of polyatomic molecules up to highly excited vibrational states by laser light.

Rydberg-Rydberg Collisions: Resonant Enhancement of State Mixing and Penning Ionization

Aaron Reinhard, Tara Cubel Liebisch, Kelly Cooper Younge +2 more

In rubidium Rydberg states, the collision nD_(5/2)+nD_(5/2)-->(n-2)F_(7/2)+(n+2)P_(3/2) is nearly resonant in the vicinity of n=43. As a result, over a short range of n centered around n approximately 43 the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction potential is quite large and turns from repulsive to attractive [Phys. Rev. A 75, 032712 (2007)10.1103/PhysRevA.75.032712]. We use state-selective field ionization to investigate the effect of this resonance on instantaneous excitation of mixed two-particle states, state-mixing collisions, and Penning ionization. We find that these processes depend on the magnitude and sign of the two-particle interaction potential, and thus on n near the resonance. The large magnitude of the observed state mixing provides evidence for many-body effects.

Observation of Laser-Induced Penning and Associative Ionization in Li-Li Collisions

A. v. Hellfeld, J. Caddick, J. Weiner

We report the direct observation of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}^{+}$, $^{7}\mathrm{Li}^{+}$, $^{13}\mathrm{Li}_{2}^{+}$, $^{14}\mathrm{Li}_{2}^{+}$ arising from single collisions between beams of lithium atoms in the presence of a laser field. Although the relative intensity of atomic ions reflects the natural isotopic abundance, a pronounced enrichment of $^{13}\mathrm{Li}_{2}^{+}$ relative to $^{14}\mathrm{Li}_{2}^{+}$ is observed.
