Abstract

Using the density-functional theory, the Ginzburg Pitaevskii Gross (GPG) equation for Bose-Einstein (BE) condensate, confined in a magnetic trap, is modified to include contribution from three-body collisions in the strongly interacting regime a>>l, 'a' is the scattering length and 'l' being the characteristic low energy length scale. This generalized GPG equation has been solved numerically using the analytically derived Thomas-Fermi order parameter, which also includes three-body interactions. The order parameter, chemical potential, extent of correlation and other ground state properties are computed when the aspect ratio, λ, is varied from1.0 to 0.05 (λ represents the anisotropy of the magnetic trap). As λ is varied from 1.0 to 0.05, the condensate shape changes from isotropic three-dimensional (3-D) to highly anisotropic quasi one-dimensional (1-D). The stability of the BE condensate increases with decrease in λ, which is also borne out by the behavior of chemical potential and the total energy per particle, as there is a decrease of about four times for a=5000 a0 as well as for a=7000 a0, 'a0' being the Bohr radius. The extent of correlations, however, increases by more than five folds, showing that quasi 1-D BE condensate is highly correlated. Both two- and three-body interaction energies show a decrease with decrease in λ: three-body interaction energy staying below two-body interaction energy for a=5000 a0 while for a=7000 a0, a cross-over occurs between the two at λ ~ 0.35. As one goes from 3-D to quasi 1-D, the percentage difference for various physical quantities, computed between only two-body interactions and when both two- and three-body interactions are considered, shows a decrease, suggesting that the effect of three-body collisions become increasingly less significant in agreement with the recent study.

Effect of three-body interaction in strongly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in isotropic and highly anisotropic magnetic trap

Shri Prakash Tewari, Poonam Silotia, Aditya Saxena +1 more

Ground state properties of Bose-Einstein condensate of 20000 23 Na atoms confined in isotropic and highly anisotropic magnetic traps in the presence of three-body interaction, in addition to the two-body and hard-core interactions, have been theoretically studied by solving modified highly non-linear Gross-Pitaevskii-Ginzburg (GPG) equation. There is increasingly significant change in the chemical potential, total and differential energies per particle as the aspect ratio. λ, is increased from 0.1 to 1.0, with respect to the corresponding values when only two-body and hard-core interactions are considered. The condensate order parameter changes drastically and becomes quasi 1-dimensional, as λ is varied from 1 to 0.1.

EFFECT OF HIGHER ORDER ENERGY CORRECTIONS INCLUDING THREE-BODY INTERACTION ON THE BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE WITH THE VARIATION OF REPULSIVE SELF INTERACTION ENERGY

Shri Prakash Tewari, Poonam Silotia, Aditya Saxena +1 more

Various ground state properties such as chemical potential, differential and total energy per particle etc. of Bose-Einstein condensate of 10000 85 Rb atoms with varying repulsive self-interaction energy have been reported considering not only two-body interaction but also including the higher order terms of the low-density energy expansion of homogeneous Bose gas in the Ginzburg, Pitaevskii and Gross (GPG) equation. These include hard-core approximation of the bosons neglected earlier and the three-body interaction terms. The study is more general as it includes the terms beyond logarithm in energy density expansion. It is also shown that such a consideration does not violate the lower bound predicted earlier in which the 'constant' beyond logarithm term in the three-body interaction was neglected.

Energy-dependent scattering and the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

M. D. Lee, S. A. Morgan, Matthew J. Davis +1 more

We consider many-body effects on particle scattering in one-, two-, and three-dimensional (3D) Bose gases. We show that at $T=0$ these effects can be modeled by the simpler two-body T matrix evaluated off the energy shell. This is important in 1D and 2D because the two-body T matrix vanishes at zero energy and so mean-field effects on particle energies must be taken into account to obtain a self-consistent treatment of low-energy collisions. Using the off-shell two-body T matrix we obtain the energy and density dependence of the effective interaction in 1D and 2D and the appropriate Gross-Pitaevskii equations for these dimensions. Our results provide an alternative derivation of those of Kolomeisky and co-workers. We present numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a 2D condensate of hard-sphere bosons in a trap. We find that the interaction strength is much greater in 2D than for a 3D gas with the same hard-sphere radius. The Thomas-Fermi regime is, therefore, approached at lower condensate populations and the energy required to create vortices is lowered compared to the 3D case.

Impact of Three-Body Interactions and Nonlinear Dispersion on the Dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates with Time-Dependent Scattering Length in a Harmonic Potential

Emmanuel Kengne, Ahmed Lakhssassi

A one-dimensional (1D) Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation which governs the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with time-dependent scattering length in a harmonic potential is considered. Through a modified phase imprint transformation into the macroscopic order parameter, we suitably generate a derivative cubic-quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (DCQ-GP) equation that describes the dynamics of condensates in the harmonic potential for both twoand three-body interatomic interactions in the presence of nonlinear dispersion. Employing a modified lens-type transformation, we reduce the DCQ-GP equation into a derivative cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau (DCQ-GL) equation that allows us to investigate the modulational instability (MI) of the system and study, through the analytical exact solutions of the considered 1D GP equation, the effects of the three-body interactions and nonlinear dispersion on the dynamics of the BECs. We observe that for BECs with repulsive two-body interatomic interactions, the attractive three-body interactions and the nonlinear dispersion have opposite effects on the condensate: (i) The attractive three-body interactions enhance the instability, while the nonlinear dispersion softens the instability of the system; (ii) the attractive three-body interactions contributes to the ejections of atoms from the condensates while the nonlinear dispersion contributes to the accumulation of atoms in the condensates; (iii) the attractive three-body interactions contributes to the broadening of the matter wave solitons, while the nonlinear dispersion contributes to the compression of the matter wave solitons.

Bose-Einstein condensate in a quartic potential:static and dynamic properties

Chaudhary, G.K., Amit Kumar Chattopadhyay, R. Ramakumar

In this paper, we present a theoretical study of a Bose-Einstein condensate of interacting bosons in a quartic trap in one, two, and three dimensions. Using Thomas-Fermi approximation, suitably complemented by numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we study the ground sate condensate density profiles, the chemical potential, the effects of cross-terms in the quartic potential, temporal evolution of various energy components of the condensate, and width oscillations of the condensate. Results obtained are compared with corresponding results for a bose condensate in a harmonic confinement.

Bose-Einstein condensates in the large-gas-parameter regime

Adelchi Fabrocini, A. Polls

Bose-Einstein condensates of ${10}^{4}{}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in a cylindrical trap are studied using a recently proposed approach based on a local-density approximation. Since the existence of a Feshbach resonance allows for widely tuning the scattering length of the atoms, values of the peak gas parameter ${x}_{\mathrm{pk}}$ of the order of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ may be attained and the standard analysis based on Gross-Pitaevskii and/or Thomas-Fermi equations may result in being questionable. Energy functionals derived from the correlated basis functions theory and the low-density expansion for a homogeneous hard-spheres gas are used to estimate corrections to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The two functionals give similar results, both showing large differences with respect to the Thomas-Fermi and Gross-Pitaevskii ones. The column densities at $z=0$ may differ by as much as $\ensuremath{\sim}30%$ and the half maximum radius by $\ensuremath{\sim}20%.$ The scattering lengths estimated by fitting the half maximum radius may differ by $\ensuremath{\sim}40%$ from those given by a Thomas-Fermi-based analysis of the experimental data.
