Single Atom Experiments and the Test of Quantum Physics

HERBERT WALTHER

In this paper experiments performed with a one-atom maser and with a few ions stored in a Paul trap are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on experiments for the test of quantum physics.

The one-atom maser and the test of quantum electrodynamics

Gerhard Rempe, HERBERT WALTHER

Experiments performed with the single-atom maser are described. The theory of the interaction of a single atom with a single electromagnetic mode of a resonant cavity is tested and the predicted dynamics such as collapse and revival of the Rabi nutation is observed.

Experiments with single atoms have become routine. In this paper two groups of these experiments will be reviewed with special emphasis on applications to study quantum phenomena in the atom-radiation interaction. The first one deals with the one-atom maser and the second one with another cavity quantum electrodynamic device on the basis of trapped ions. The latter device has interesting applications in quantum computing and quantum information.
