Abstract

We quantitatively explore the ability of coupled waveguide arrays to characterize and manipulate two-photon and NOON states. We emphasize in particular the potential of patterned arrays in which the coupling is structured.

Many photonic quantum information tasks employ single photons and linear transformations to create and manipulate quantum states of light to process information. Integrated optical systems have become useful platforms to perform these tasks. New technologies introduce new possible processes available for multimode quantum operations. Here we explore one such setup, motivated by current experiments, which is a nonlinear-waveguide array system operating in a regime of nondegenerate-frequency down-converted photons. This allows one photon to act as a herald for the other photon, which is created in a superposition of the individual waveguide channels. We demonstrate this setup's ability to generate highly nonclassical states, such as $N$-photon Fock states and NOON states.

Generation of NOON States in Waveguide Arrays

Francisco Soto, Héctor M. Moya‐Cessa

Abstract A method to generate NOON states with three photons by injecting photons in an array of three waveguides is presented. Conditional measurements project the wave function in a given (desired) state. In passing, it is shown how the array of three waveguides, that effectively reproduces the interaction of three fields, may be reduced to the interaction of two fields.

Photon correlations in two-dimensional waveguide arrays and their classical estimate

Robert Keil, Alexander Szameit, Felix Dreisow +3 more

Interference effects of photon pairs propagating through two-dimensional lattices of evanescently coupled waveguides are theoretically analyzed for input states of independent and path-entangled photons. Their correlation unveils characteristic Hong-Ou-Mandel interferences as well as more complex phenomena unique to these structures. Furthermore, purely classical states of light are used to simulate these quantum interferences in intensity correlation experiments. The results suggest that waveguide arrays can be employed as convenient devices for manipulating quantum states of light.
