Abstract

We calculate finite-size scaling functions (FSSF's) of Binder parameter g and magnetization distribution function $p(m)$ for the Ising model on ${L}_{1}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{L}_{2}$ square lattices with periodic boundary conditions in the horizontal ${L}_{1}$ direction and tilted boundary conditions in the vertical ${L}_{2}$ direction such that the $i\mathrm{th}$ site in the first row is connected with the $\mathrm{mod}{(i+cL}_{1}{,L}_{1})\mathrm{th}$ site in the ${L}_{2}$ row of the lattice, where $1<~i<~{L}_{1}.$ For fixed sets of $(a,c)$ with ${a=L}_{1}{/L}_{2},$ the FSSF's of g and $p(m)$ are universal and in such cases ${a/(c}^{2}{a}^{2}+1)$ is an invariant. For percolation on lattices with fixed a, the FSSF of the existence probability (also called spanning probability) is not affected by c.

Cluster Analysis of the Ising Model and Universal Finite-Size Scaling

Yutaka Okabe, Kazuhisa Kaneda, Yusuke Tomita +2 more

The recent progress in the study of finite-size scaling (FSS) properties of the Ising model is briefly reviewed. We calculate the universal FSS functions for the Binder parameter g and the magnetization distribution function p(m) for the Ising model on L1×L2 two-dimensional lattices with tilted boundary conditions. We show that the FSS functions are universal for fixed sets of the aspect ratio L1/L2 and the tilt parameter. We also study the percolating properties of the Ising model, giving attention to the effects of the aspect ratio of finite systems. We elucidate the origin of the complex structure of p(m) for the system with large aspect ratio by the multiple-percolating-cluster argument.

Cluster analysis and finite-size scaling for Ising spin systems

Yusuke Tomita, Yutaka Okabe, Chin‐Kun Hu

Based on the connection between the Ising model and a correlated percolation model, we calculate the distribution function for the fraction (c) of lattice sites in percolating clusters in subgraphs with n percolating clusters, f(n)(c), and the distribution function for magnetization (m) in subgraphs with n percolating clusters, p(n)(m). We find that f(n)(c) and p(n)(m) have very good finite-size scaling behavior and that they have universal finite-size scaling functions for the model on square, plane triangular, and honeycomb lattices when aspect ratios of these lattices have the proportions 1:square root[3]/2:square root[3]. The complex structure of the magnetization distribution function p(m) for the system with large aspect ratio could be understood from the independent orientations of two or more percolation clusters in such a system.

Universal scaling form of the correlation length in Ising strips with periodic, free, fixed, and mixed boundary conditions

Theodore W. Burkhardt, Ihnsouk Guim

According to finite-size scaling theory, the correlation length in an Ising strip with infinite length and a width of L lattice constants has the form ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{L}$(T)=Lf(c(T-${T}_{c}$)L) in the scaling regime L\ensuremath{\gg}1,\ensuremath{\Vert}T-${T}_{c}$\ensuremath{\Vert}/${T}_{c}$\ensuremath{\ll}1. Here f(x) is a universal scaling function, which does, however, depend on the boundary conditions at the edges of the strip. Utilizing the correspondence between the two-dimensional Ising model and the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a transverse field, we calculate the explicit form of the function f(x) for spin-spin and energy-energy correlations in strips with periodic, free, fixed, and mixed free-fixed boundary conditions.

Universal finite-size scaling functions for percolation on three-dimensional lattices

Chai‐Yu Lin, Chin‐Kun Hu

Using a histogram Monte Carlo simulation method (HMCSM), Hu, Lin, and Chen found that bond and site percolation models on planar lattices have universal finite-size scaling functions for the existence probability ${E}_{p},$ the percolation probability $P,$ and the probability ${W}_{n}$ for the appearance of $n$ percolating clusters in these models. In this paper we extend above study to percolation on three-dimensional lattices with various linear dimensions $L.$ Using the HMCSM, we calculate the existence probability ${E}_{p}$ and the percolation probability $P$ for site and bond percolation on a simple-cubic (sc) lattice, and site percolation on body-centered-cubic and face-centered-cubic lattices; each lattice has the same linear dimension in three dimensions. Using the data of ${E}_{p}$ and $P$ in a percolation renormalization group method, we find that the critical exponents obtained are quite consistent with the universality of critical exponents. Using a small number of nonuniversal metric factors, we find that ${E}_{p}$ and $P$ have universal finite-size scaling functions. This implies that the critical ${E}_{p}$ is a universal quantity, which is $0.265\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005$ for free boundary conditions and $0.924\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005$ for periodic boundary conditions. We also find that ${W}_{n}$ for site and bond percolation on sc lattices have universal finite-size scaling functions.

Boundary conditions and scaling functions of percolation models

Chin‐Kun Hu

We use a histogram Monte Carlo simulation method to calculate the scaling functions of the existence probability E p and the percolation probability P of the site percolation model on square lattices with free and periodic boundary conditions. We find that different boundary conditions give quite different scaling functions near the critical region. However, they give the consistent critical point, critical exponents, and the thermodynamic order parameter from renormalization-group calculations. Similar results are found for other percolation models. The implications of our calculated results for some theoretical problems of current interest are discussed.

Anisotropy and universality in finite-size scaling: Critical Binder cumulant of a two-dimensional Ising model

Boris Kastening

We reanalyze transfer-matrix and Monte Carlo results for the critical Binder cumulant U* of an anisotropic two-dimensional Ising model on a square lattice in a square geometry with periodic boundary conditions. Spins are coupled between nearest-neighboring sites and between next-nearest-neighboring sites along one of the lattice diagonals. We find that U* depends only on the asymptotic critical long-distance features of the anisotropy, irrespective of its realization through ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor couplings. We modify an earlier renormalization-group calculation to obtain a quantitative description of the anisotropy dependence of U*. Our results support our recent claim towards the validity of universal finite-size scaling for critical phenomena in the presence of a weak anisotropy.
