The 4He Trimer: Structure and Energetics of a Very Unusual Molecule

Abstract

The 4He3 weakly interacting system is analysed by constructing the full interaction as a sum of two-body (2B) potentials chosen among the most recent proposals from the literature. The spatial density distributions of the three bound atoms are obtained using a diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) algorithm and a stochastic analysis under specific geometric constraints is carried out with the resulting densities in order to recover a more conventional structural picture for such floppy system. The total binding energies were obtained with the chosen potentials analysed in the present work, using the DMC algorithm, and are compared with previous published results. The ensuing spatial distributions are analysed in some detail to select the dominant structures from a conventional triangular description of this very floppy molecule.

Ground states of weakly bound three-atom systems: energies and shapes of 4He2X clusters from Monte Carlo calculations

Cono Di Paola, Franco Antonio Gianturco, Francesco Paesani +5 more

The interactions between alkali atoms and 4 He, as well as those between H - and 4 He, are known to be even weaker than those between two helium atoms. In this work we show that when the three-particle potential energy surface is obtained as a sum of two-body functions, the ensuing ground state configurations are indeed very weakly bound and acquire spatial shapes difficult to describe in simple configurational terms. We have employed the quantum diffusion Monte Carlo method to analyse the He 2 Li, He 2 Na and He 2 H - systems, for which possible molecular `shapes' are extracted from the final DMC distributions by defining within them conventional chemical structures with varying degree of `stiffness' attached to the nuclear positions.

Structure and energetics of small helium clusters: Quantum simulations using a recent perturbational pair potential

Marius Lewerenz

We report accurate ground state energies and structural properties for small clusters of 4He computed with the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method combined with high quality trial wave functions and using the recent analytical pair potential of Tang, Toennies, and Yiu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 1546 (1995)]. Calculations based on the older HFD-B(He) potential are reported for comparison. The clusters are found to be extremely floppy and to be characterized by very diffuse wave functions. The DMC results for 4He2 and 4He3 are in excellent agreement with other calculations using conventional methods. 4He3 is found to have a noticeable contribution from nearly linear geometries. The internal structure of the clusters is described by a three particle correlation function which reveals a significantly non-spherical internal cluster structure. The energies for all cluster sizes are found to be slightly higher than those obtained with the HFD-B(He) pair potential. Exploratory calculations on the helium trimer indicate that the effects of three body interactions do not exceed the uncertainty margin provided by different state of the art pair potentials.

The structure of a weakly bound ionic trimer: Calculations for the He24H− complex

Franco Antonio Gianturco, Francesco Paesani, I. Baccarelli +6 more

The weakly bound diatomic systems He24 and HeH−4 have been found able to support only one bound state for J=0, although the latter also supports an additional bound state for J=1. In the present paper we, therefore, study the structure of the bound states which might exist for the weakly bound triatomic He24H−, in its J=0 state, by describing the full potential as a simple addition of two-body (2B) interactions. We carry out bound state calculations using both Jacobi coordinates within a discrete variable representation (DVR) and pair coordinates with a distributed Gaussian function (DGF) expansion. The system is shown to possess two bound states with respect to its lower dissociation threshold and two further “ghost” states before the complete break-up threshold. The spatial structures of such states and of the floppy complex are analyzed in detail, as is the possibility of detecting Efimov-type states in such a weakly bound aggregate. Finally, the inclusion of three-body (3B) forces in the description of the full interaction and its effect on the number of possible bound states is also discussed.

Weakly bound finite systems: (4He)N–Rb2(3Σu), clustering structures from a quantum Monte Carlo approach

David López‐Durán, R. Rodríguez-Cantano, Tomás González‐Lezana +4 more

We report here ((4)He)(N)-Rb(2)((3)Σ(u)) complexes, 2 ≤ N ≤ 20, analysed through a quantum diffusion Monte Carlo stochastic approach. The calculations show that the spin stretched dimer molecule is bound outside the pure He sub-complex, due to the stronger He-He potential as compared with the He-Rb(2) interaction, while the rare gas atom moiety presents, in turn, a shell-like structure with ten He adatoms completing the first shell. Our results agree with previous findings on this and similarly weakly interacting systems.

Diffusion Monte Carlo description of Cs2(3Σu)–(4He)Nclusters: an example of weak dopant–helium interaction

David López‐Durán, Ricardo Pérez de Tudela, R. Rodríguez-Cantano +4 more

In this paper, we study the energy and geometric properties of Cs 2 ( 3 Σ u )–( 4 He) N clusters, 2⩽ N ⩽20, N even, through a diffusion Monte Carlo methodology. Considering the results for doped clusters in which the He–impurity interaction dominates over the He–He one, our aim is to investigate the case when this assumption is not fulfilled anymore and the helium–helium potential becomes dominant. We find a scenario where a pure helium subcomplex is formed, leaving out the alkaline dimer, with the largest species gathering the helium atoms in a two-shell-like structure, the first of which is filled with ten particles. Our results are in agreement with previous theoretical and experimental findings.

Calculations of the binding energies of weakly bound He-He-Ba molecules

Gou Qing-Dong, Yong Li

The three-body Schrdinger equation is approximately solved in the hyperspherical coordinates and the binding energies of the three-body weakly bound systems are calculated with the purpose to find if He-He-Ba trimers could exist. Using the special feature of the B-spline function like the flexible and highly localized properties, hypersphercial potentials are obtained by modifying the knots distribution of the B-spline basis of different weakly bound three-atom systems. Employing the best empirical interaction potentials between each pair of particles, we obtain that in the ground state binding energies of the weakly bound typical three-atom systems, the bindings of the molecules, 4He-4He-138Ba, 4He-3He-138Ba and 3He-3He-138Ba are possible. The binding energies of these systems are shown in the order of 1 Kelvin, each system could support only one bound state. These weakly bound molecules can exist only in a very cold environment. To get insight into the geometry of the molecules, the features of the channel functions associated with the hyperspherical potential curves of each system are investigated.
