Abstract

We study interacting molecules on the surface of a ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$-wave superconductor. We show that the interplay between the molecules' excitation spectrum and quantum interference of the scattered host electrons leads to a series of characteristic signatures and intriguing quantum effects in the superconductor's local density of states. We demonstrate that these effects give insight into both the nature of the superconducting pairing correlations and the intermolecular interactions.

Theory of Local Density of States ofdx2-y2-Wave Superconducting State Near the Surfaces of thet-JModel

Yasunari Tanuma, Yukio Tanaka, Masao Ogata +1 more

Spatial dependencies of the pair potential and the local density of states near the surfaces of $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductors are studied theoretically. The calculation is based on the t-J model within a mean-field theory with Gutzwiller approximation. Various types of surface geometries are considered. Similar to our result in the extended Hubbard model, it is found that the formation of zero-energy states strongly depends on the surface geometry. In addition to this feature, the zero-energy states give peak splitting for the (110) surfaces when the super-exchange interaction $J$ is large. This is due to the induced s-wave component near the surface. The present result explains the microscopic origin of the spontaneous time- reversal symmetry breaking at the surfaces of high-$T_{c}$ superconductors.

Pseudogap above Tc in a model with dx2−y2 pairing

Jan R. Engelbrecht, Alexander Nazarenko, Mohit Randeria +1 more

We study the anomalous normal-state properties of a simple two-dimensional model whose ground state is a $d$-wave superconductor. Using a self-consistent, conserving formulation, we show that pairing correlations above ${T}_{c}$ lead to the appearance of a highly anisotropic pseudogap in the electronic spectral function and the destruction of the Fermi surface. We discuss the similarities and differences between our results and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments on underdoped cuprates.

dx2−y2 superconductivity in a model of correlated fermions

Alexander Nazarenko, Adriana Moreo, Elbio R. Dagotto +1 more

A two-dimensional fermionic model with attractive interactions is discussed. Its form is motivated by the phenomenology of the underdoped high-${T}_{c}$ cuprates, as discussed in previous literature. The exact solution to the two-particle problem leads to a bound state in the ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ subspace. Numerical techniques show that the model has strong ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ pairing correlations in the ground state at low fermionic density. Within a self-consistent random phase approximation diagrammatic study, the model has a $d$-wave superconducting (SC) phase. The density dependence of the critical temperature is calculated. We argue that in the context of $d$-wave SC this model fulfills the role that the attractive on-site Hubbard model has played for $s$-wave SC. We also show that another candidate, the attractive $t\ensuremath{-}U\ensuremath{-}V$ model, is actually not useful as a toy model for $d$-wave SC for a variety of reasons.

Indications of dx2 - y2 superconductivity in the two dimensionalt-Jmodel

Elbio R. Dagotto, José A. Riera

Supercomputing correlations in the two dimensional t-J model at zero temperature are evaluated using numerical techniques. At the fermionic density 〈n〉\ensuremath{\sim}1/2, strong signals of ${\mathit{d}}_{\mathit{x}}^{2}$-${\mathit{y}}^{2}$ superconductivity were observed in the ground state. These conclusions are based on a study of static pairing correlations, the Meissner effect, and flux quantization as indicators of superconductivity. A tentative phase diagram of the two dimensional t-j model is presented.

Superconductivity and Spin Density Wave in Two Dimensional Hubbard Model

Hiroshi Shimahara, Satoshi Takada

An interplay between the superconductivity and spin density wave (SDW) is studied from the perturbative point of view based on the two dimensional Hubbard model. It is shown that the d-pairing superconductivity is induced by spin fluctuations near the SDW boundary. The superconducting transition temperature ( T c ) is found to be remarkably suppressed by the renormalization through the electron self-energy, and to be sensitive to the band parameters due to nesting of the Fermi surface and the presence of the van Hove singularity as well as to the Fermi energy and the on-site interaction. As a consequence T c is enhanced by the next-nearest-neighbour hopping integral. The relation between the present result and experiments of high T c superconductors is discussed.

Band-Renormalization Effects and Predominant Antiferromagnetic Order in Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

Band renormalization effects (BRE) are comprehensively studied for a mixed state of dx2-y2-wave superconducting (d-SC) and antiferromagnetic (AF) orders, in addition to simple d-SC, AF, and normal (paramagnetic) states, by applying a variational Monte Carlo method to a two-dimensional Hubbard (t-t'-U) model.
