Two models of quantum random walk

Abstract

Abstract We present an overview of two models of quantum random walk. In the first model, the discrete quantum random walk, we present the explicit solution for the recurring amplitude of the quantum random walk on a one-dimensional lattice. We also introduce a new method of solving the problem of random walk in the most general case and use it to derive the hitting amplitude for quantum random walk on the hypercube. The second is a special model based on a local interaction between neighboring spin-1/2 particles on a one-dimensional lattice. We present explicit results for the relevant quantities and obtain an upper bound on the speed of convergence to limiting probability distribution.

A path integral formula with applications to quantum random walks inZd

Wei-Shih Yang, Chaobin Liu, Kai Zhang

We consider general quantum random walks in a d -dimensional half-space. We first obtain a path integral formula for general quantum random walks in a d -dimensional space. Our path integral formula is valid for general quantum random walks on Cayley graphs as well. Then the path integral formula is applied to obtain the scaling limit of the exit distribution, the expectation of exit time and the asymptotic behaviour of the exit probabilities, for general quantum random walks in a half-space under some conditions on amplitude functions. The conditions are shown to be satisfied by both the Hadamard and Grover quantum random walks in two-dimensional half-spaces. For the two-dimensional case, we show that the critical exponent for the scaling limit of the hitting distribution is 1 as the lattice spacing tends to zero, i.e. the natural magnitude of the hitting position is of order O (1) if the lattice spacing is set to be 1/ n . We also show that the rate of convergence of the total hitting probability has lower bound n −2 and upper bound n −2+ for any > 0. For a quantum random walk with a fixed starting point, we show that the probability of hitting times at the hyperplane decays faster than that of the classical random walk. In both one and two dimensions, given the event of a hit, the conditional expectation of hitting times is finite, in contrast to being infinite for the classical case. In the one-dimensional case, we also obtain an exact order of the probability distribution of the hitting time at 0.

Quantum Walks on the Hypercube

Cristopher Moore, Alexander C. Russell

Recently, it has been shown that one-dimensional quantum walks can mix more quickly than classical random walks, suggesting that quantum Monte Carlo algorithms can outperform their classical counterparts. We study two quantum walks on the n-dimensional hypercube, one in discrete time and one in continuous time. In both cases we show that the quantum walk mixes in (π/4)n steps, faster than the O(n log n) steps required by the classical walk. In the continuous-time case, the probability distribution is {\em exactly} uniform at this time. More importantly, these walks expose several subtleties in the definition of mixing time for quantum walks. Even though the continuous-time walk has an O(n) instantaneous mixing time at which it is precisely uniform, it never approaches the uniform distribution when the stopping time is chosen randomly as in [AharonovAKV2001]. Our analysis treats interference between terms of different phase more carefully than is necessary for the walk on the cycle; previous general bounds predict an exponential, rather than linear, mixing time for the hypercube.

Scattering model for quantum random walks on a hypercube

Jozef Košík, Vladimír Bužek

Following a recent work by Hillery et al. [Phys. Rev. A 68, 032314 (2003)], we introduce a scattering model of a quantum random walk (SQRW) on a hybercube. We show that this type of quantum random walk can be reduced to the quantum random walk on the line and we derive the corresponding hitting amplitudes. We investigate the scattering properties of the hypercube, connected to the semi-infinite tails. We prove that the SQRW is a generalized version of the coined quantum random walk. We show how to implement the SQRW efficiently using a quantum circuit with standard gates. We discuss one possible version of a quantum search algorithm using the SQRW. Finally, we analyze symmetries that underlie the SQRW and may simplify its solution considerably.

One-dimensional quantum random walk for fermions and bosons

Salvador Godoy, Francisco Espinosa‐Magaña

With the help of quantum-scattering-theory methods and the approximation of the stationary phase, we propose a one-dimensional quantum-random-walk (QRW) model, which describes for both tunneling and scattering above the potential, the coherent diffusion of independent particles described by wave packets in a periodic one-dimensional lattice. The QRW model describes for each lattice cell the time evolution of modulating amplitudes of two opposite-moving wave packets as they are scattered by periodic potential barriers. Since the QRW model is a coherent process, interference contributions in the probabilities bring about strong departures from classical results. For many identical free particles we obtain the theoretical and graphical Bose and Fermi two-body QRW probability distribution. The result is generalized to N identical free particles and we obtain the N-body Bose and Fermi QRW probability distribution.

Anderson localization in 1-D quantum random walk

A. N. Bondarenko, Дедок Василий Александрович

In this paper we intend to present some new results concerning two quantum models: quantum scattering model and discrete quantum random walk. We present the analytical solution of the 1D quantum random walk and give an explicit formula of the quantum return probability. The exact solution provides weak Anderson localization in discrete quantum random walk theory. Connectivity between these theories is introduced.

An analytic solution for one-dimensional quantum walks

Ian Fuss, Lang White, Peter J. Sherman +1 more

The first general analytic solutions for the one-dimensional walk in position and momentum space are derived. These solutions reveal, among other things, new symmetry features of quantum walk probability densities and further insight into the behaviour of their moments. The analytic expressions for the quantum walk probability distributions provide a means of modelling quantum phenomena that is analogous to that provided by random walks in the classical domain.
