Negative dispersion without absorption

A. Rocco, Andreas Wicht, M. Muller +2 more

Summary form only given. We study the optical properties of negative dispersive but nevertheless transparent media. Such medium can be generated using atomic phase coherence. Theoretical studies have shown that strongly driven two level systems may exhibit the desired optical properties, that is negative dispersion of a well defined amount at a point of vanishing absorption. When this medium is placed inside an optical resonator the linewidth is increased without sacrificing its build up. We present the experimental setup which is used to realize a negative dispersive non-absorbing medium. To obtain a strongly driven two level system a calcium atomic beam is pumped at the transition 4s/sup 21/S/sub 0//spl rarr/4s4p/sup 1/P/sub 1/. The optical properties of the beam are studied.

Coherent pulse interaction with two-level system embedded in a dispersive medium

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

We present an integrable generalization of the Maxwell-Bloch equations describing electromagnetic-field interaction with a two-level system implemented in a dispersive host medium. Two physical onsets of the model are presented. The technique of the inverse scattering transform for the two sets of physical parameters is used to find soliton solutions. It is found that the model possesses both singular and nonsingular soliton solutions. The application of the results for a lossless nonlinear dispersion management of solitons is discussed.

Born-fock approximation and dispersion properties of a resonant medium

G. G. Grigoryan

A procedure of correct calculation of the dispersion series for polarization of a resonant nonlinear medium is proposed. For the example of an inverted two-level system the maximal time of the group advance is analyzed for a pulse propagating with the velocity exceeding the speed of light.
