Many-Neighbored Ising Chain

Abstract

Using a method suggested by Montroll, we extend the well-known matrix formulation of the nearest-neighbor one-dimensional Ising problem to allow for interactions with an arbitrary finite range n, general spin l, and an applied magnetic field B. We exhibit the relevant matrix element explicitly and hence formally obtain the partition function via an eigenvalue problem of order (2l + 1)n. For the case B = 0, l = ½ we introduce a change of variable which simplifies the partition function while still allowing a matrix formulation. Using this approach we have computed specific-heat curves for infinite, ferromagnetic Ising chains with interactions of range n (n ≤ 7). We prove in an appendix that open and cyclic boundary conditions are equivalent for the system under consideration.

A Numerical Investigation of a Certain One-Dimensional Ising Model

Jimmy Green

The model is a linear chain in which each spin interacts with its 2r nearest neighbors, the interaction energy being proportional to 1/r. Using a method similar to that of Montroll, the partition function of the model in the thermodynamic limit is shown to be related to the largest eigenvalue of a certain matrix. The largest eigenvalue of the matrix is determined numerically for 3 < r < 12. Also, a correct method is demonstrated for evaluating an improper limit of the model, in which the interaction range is set to the chain length before the limit of an infinite number of spins is taken. Previously published works have performed this calculation incorrectly. Although the numerical results show some evidence of convergence to the improper limit, the results are inconclusive and furthermore raise doubts about the practicality of the numerical method in this context.

Statistical Mechanics of Nearest Neighbor Systems II. General Theory and Application to Two-Dimensional Ferromagnets

Elliott W. Montroll

This is a continuation of an effort to reduce to the solution of a characteristic value problem the rigorous calculation of thermodynamic properties of systems in which the intermolecular forces are sufficiently short ranged so that practically the entire potential energy of the system results from interactions between nearest neighbors. The partition function of such a system can be expressed in terms of the largest characteristic value of a linear operator equation and finally as the ratio of partition functions of systems with relatively few particles whose potential energy functions differ somewhat from those in the original system. A method of evaluating grand partition functions and one of introducing interactions between more distant neighbors are discussed. The general theory is applied to the calculation of magnetization, internal energy, and specific heat of two-dimensional ferromagnets on the basis of the Ising model. There seems to exist a λ-point phase transition in the change from ferromagnetic to nonferromagnetic states.

II. Exact solutions of disordered Ising spin chains in a magnetic field

Stephen B. Haley

The one-dimensional Ising model with arbitrary nearest neighbor interactions and a magnetic field is formulated in terms of the spin correlation function relations derived in the preceding article I. The local magnetization and the two-spin correlation functions are shown to satisfy a set of coupled algebraic summation equations. The solution of this set is given in terms of a power series in hyberbolic tangents of the magnetic field strength, for chains of arbitrary length. For cases in which the interaction constants are random variables, explicit expressions are derived for the configurational averaged magnetization and the two-spin correlation functions to the lowest order in the magnetic field.

Ising Chain with Long- and Short-Range Interactions

Akihide Oguchi

The Ising linear chain with nearest-neighbor interactions of strength J s and infinite long-range ferromagnetic exponential interactions of strength J l was solved exactly in the presence of the external field. The spontaneous magnetization and the susceptibility are obtained. The transition temperature depends on J s and J l . For J s >0, the model shows the second order phase transion. The specific heat shows both a broad peak and a sharp peak. The value of sharp peak of the specific heat depends on J s and J l . For J s <0, the properties of the transition agree with those of Nagle model with long-range equivalent-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions. The exact free energy and the long-range order of our model are identical with those of the variational theory of a quasi-one-dimensional model.

Difference Equation Solutions to the One-Dimensional Ising Model with General Spin

Howard Silver, Norman E. Frankel

The one-dimensional Ising model with general spin S and either open or periodic boundary conditions has been formulated as a difference equation of order 2S+1 with non-zero magnetic field B. This difference equation has the characteristic equation of the transfer matrix, V, as its indicial equation. When B=0, for the open chain, the order of the difference equation is reduced to [S+1]. It is shown that the correlation functions for the open chain satisfy similar difference equations. This result explicitly displays the lack of translational invariance of the open chain. For several cases it is shown that the partition function can be represented as the difference of two Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

One‐dimensional disordered magnetic Ising systems: A new approach

V. Gasparian, David Badalian, Esther Jódar

Abstract We reconsider the problem of a one‐dimensional Ising model with an arbitrary nearest‐neighbor random exchange integral, temperature, and random magnetic field in each site. A convenient formalism is developed that reduces the partition function to a recurrence equation, which is convenient both for numerical as well as for analytical approaches. We have calculated asymptotic expressions for an ensemble averaged free energy and the averaged magnetization in the case of strong and weak couplings in external constant magnetic field. With a random magnetic field at each site in addition to nearest‐neighbor random exchange integrals we also evaluated the free energy. We show that the zeros of the partition function for the Ising model in the complex external magnetic field plane formally coincide with the singularities of the real part of electron's transmission amplitude through the chain of δ‐function potentials.
