Pulse-propagation-induced higher orders of diffraction in transient four-wave mixing with semiconductors

B. Lummer, J.‐M. Wagner, R. Heitz +3 more

Higher orders of diffraction observed in a transient four-wave mixing experiment with acceptor-bound exciton complexes in CdS are analyzed in terms of pulse propagation. The description is based on a mean-field correction to the driving electric field in the optical Bloch equations, which are shown to generally lack higher-order diffraction for two-pulse self-diffraction. A propagation-induced sequence of stimulated echoes diffracted at the population grating dominates at least the second order of diffraction. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Temperature diagnostics for cold sodium atoms by transient four-wave mixing

Masaharu Mitsunaga, Makoto Yamashita, Masato Koashi +1 more

Transient four-wave mixing signals were observed in cold sodium atoms. This phenomenon is interpreted as Bragg diffraction of a probe pulse by a population grating of the ground-state hyperfine level induced by pump pulses. The decay time of this grating is directly related to the temperature of the cold atoms and can serve as a novel technique for temperature diagnostics.

Detection of dynamic population gratings in erbium-doped optical fibers by means of transient fluorescence excited by oscillating interference pattern

Serguei I. Stepanov, Eliseo Hernández

We report a new, to the best of our knowledge, method for detection of dynamic population gratings in Er-doped fibers with saturable absorption that is based on observation of the transient fluorescence resulting from fast displacement of the recording interference pattern. The signal appears due to essentially different relaxation times of the fluorescence in bright and dark fringes of the light pattern. The experimental results obtained at the recording wavelength λ=1492 nm in a single-mode fiber with 5600 ppm Er demonstrate good agreement with the theoretical model based on a saturable two-level system. Unlike conventional diffraction-based techniques, the proposed method results in the local grating amplitude value and can be used for characterization of the grating amplitude spatial profile. It can also be suitable for characterization of the grating formation processes in other bulk and thin-film media with saturable absorption.
