Regeneration of photon echoes with amplified photon echoes

Abstract

Photon-echo-based devices have been proposed for many applications in data storage, image processing, and optical communications. Many of these applications would benefit if the output from the photon-echo process could be used as input in a second photon-echo process. We demonstrate the generation of such secondary echoes, using the amplified output from an initial photon-echo process. The amplification is performed with a Pr:ZBLAN fiber amplifier, which gives a gain of more than 300 at 606 nm when pumped with 320 mW of power at 476 nm.

Amplification of photon echo signals for photon-echo-based optical storage and optical processing devices

Ming Tian, N. Krishna Mohan, Ulf Elman +2 more

In photon-echo-based optical data storage and data processing the photon echo output intensity generally is about 0.1 - 1% of the input intensity. Many devices, such as processors would require that the photon echo output is used as an input to a new photon echo process. To obtain a sufficient signal-to- noise it would be necessary to first amplify the photon echo output signal. In this paper Pr-doped ZBLAN fibers are used to amplify the photon echo signals generated in Pr-doped Y2SiO5 at 606 nm. The fiber amplifier is pumped by the 476 nm output from an Ar-ion laser. Mirror-less lasing due to reflection at the fiber ends is eliminated by cleaving the fiber ends at an angle. The upper limit of the gain in a fiber is set by the core refractive index and the fiber numerical aperture. By changing from a fiber with numerical aperture of 0.4 to one with 0.15, the gain obtained at 606 nm is increased from 45 to 330.

Amplification of photon echo signals using Pr:ZBLAN fiber

Summary form only given. Many photon-echo-based devices or processes, e.g., optical bit rate converters, routers, erasable memories, would require that the photon echo output be used as an input to a new photon echo process. This requires amplification of the photon echo output signal. We have demonstrated 45 times amplification of photon echo signals generated in Pr-doped Y/sub 2/SiO/sub 5/ at 606 nm in a Pr-doped ZBLAN fibre amplifier.

Amplification of photon echo signals by use of a fiber amplifier

Baozhu Luo, Ulf Elman, Stefan Kröll +2 more

The efficiency of photon-echo processes typically lies in the 0.1-1% range. For many photon-echo-based applications suggested in optical storage and all-optical communication the photon-echo output pulses would need to be used as input data to a new photon-echo process. In such cases amplification of the photon-echo output signals would be necessary for an acceptable signal-to-noise ratio to be obtained. We show that a Pr-doped ZBLAN fiber is able to produce significant amplification of photon-echo signals generated in Pr-doped Y(2)SiO(5) at 606 nm.

Photon-echo amplification by an external-cavity amplifier

Byoung Seung HAM, M. K. Kim

We demonstrate as much as 2.5 × 10(5) amplification of a photon-echo signal using a simple external-cavity amplifier. The method may be useful in regeneration of photon echo and memory refresh in a dynamic photon-echo optical memory system. We propose an image storage system that is capable of regeneration and amplification of phase-conjugate images in a feedback loop.

Photon-Echoes in a Pumped Er-Doped Fiber

Valéria Loureiro da Silva, Yaron R. Silberberg

Recently we reported the first photon echo experiments in Er-doped fibers, and described their application to ultrafast time domain signal processing [1]. Our previous results were obtained with absorbing Er-doped fibers at 4°K, and our signals at 1.53µm were attenuated by the fiber. In this paper we report photon echo experiments with Er-doped amplifiers. We expect the photon echo process in amplifiers to yield strong echoes, perhaps stronger then the input signal. This could be important for signal processing applications. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of photon echo in any inverted system.
